“bona fide 4 star in stunning location”
Reviewed January 8, 2011

The Stellenbosch area is a treat and only 30-40 mins from Cape Town by car. Provided you have a car and do not want to be next to the beach, it is a great place to stay. This hotel offers very good value and was significantly cheaper than other 4 star hotels in the area. We were worried this might be reflected in the quality but far from it. Ensure you book a room in the annex as these are the best. Rooms 35 and above are the ones you want. Large, modern and extremely well appointed. Fabulous views for the upstairs rooms. We would definitely recommend this hotel. Make sure you visit Franschoek as well as Stellenbosch. It is as French influenced as Stellenbosch is German/Dutch.

we have just come back from a 12 day trip in south africa and stayed in some very nice hotels but unfortunately devon valley was not one of them. We were expecting a more rustic winery style hotel from their website but the reality is very standard outdated chain hotel with second rate rooms and long bland corridors. Service was ok as you would expect in south africa but the food was ordinary. There was no character to the place and although the views were amazing over the winelands this is the case in most areas of stellenbosch. We were in a hurry to escape this place after just one night!

SylvanVale, Manager at Devon Valley Hotel, responded to this review, January 9, 2011
Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review on TripAdvisor and your honest comments. We do always appreciate feedback and welcome constructive criticism about our service and standard of facilities. I am quite alarmed that your one night in our hotel did not live up to your expectations of what you wanted as a 'rustic winery hotel'. We've recently been through a major refurbishment project (of all rooms - over a period of 4 years in off peak seasons - doing all 50 rooms and public areas) and we do pride ourselves in offering an authentic and tranquil winelands experience by a team of dedicated staff who love to serve guests with enthusiam. We only have 4 other properties in our hotel group (1 in Somerset West and 3 in Camp's Bay) and we're therefore not really your typical 'chain hotel'. It worries me therefore that you perceived us to be a chain hotel as well as outdated? The original hotel main building was built in 1947 and has a very unique facade (the Canadian Cedarwood exterior) and specifically with the hotel's history in mind, we refurbished the property in such a way that we remained true to the real 'life & soul' of the hotel, offering elegant rooms with a contemporary colonial appearance.

I do believe that somehow you didn't get a taste of the 'real Devon Valley' and that is regrettable. From your comment I can gather that you stayed in one of our Classic rooms in our main building, but I'm not sure whether you had dinner in our restaurant or only breakfast.

I am truly sorry if our hotel and team disappointed you and I do hope that you would consider sending me more detailed feedback via email about your experience so that I can do the necessary follow up with our management team and staff. Thank you for taking the time to communicate online. Every guest checks in with certain expectations and a picture in their mind of what they hope to find and experience in a hotel. Our aim is as far as possible, to cater to the needs of each person we welcome into our 'home'. For the very short period you were in-house with us, we didn't manage to make you feel completely at home and for that I am truly sorry.

We do wish you all the best for 2011 and only positive & enjoyable future travelling experiences!
Kind regards,

We last stayed at the Devon Valley Hotel sixteen years ago and loved it so much we returned with our teenage children for a four night stay. If possible, it is even better than it was before. Our adjoining rooms were in the new block, with a wonderul view out over the lawns and flower beds (and jacaranda trees which were all in flower) to the vineyards and moutains beyond.

The hotel has it's own winery and it is in walking distance of the JC LeRoux vineyards (we all enjoyed the champagne and nougat tasting there!) and an easy drive to many of the other wonderful vineyards in the Stellenbosch area.

The rooms were beautifully furnished with huge ensuite bathrooms and luxurious baths, the service was great and the food delicious. We didn't want to leave!

The hotel is in a great location, away from it all, very peacefull, bedrooms very well appointed and beds comfortable.Meals excellent good buffet well cooked and a lot of it..
I had a belly pork meal off the a la carte, and must say it was outstanding, the best belly pork I have ever eaten, this has become a popular feature of English menus but they cannot compete with the Devon Valley offering. The prices were reasonable and the stay most enjoyable helped by the friendly and happy staff.

We stayed in this hotel towards the end of a fairly strenuous but exciting tour. It has its own winery and the most beautiful situation overlooking the Devon Valley. The welcome of the staff and the service provided while we were there were superb - friendly, efficient and nothing too much trouble. The food was excellent and served in a wonderfull dining room. However, the star turn for us was our bedroom. Not particularly large, although the en-suite was much bigger than expected, the furnishings and comfort were excellent. The bed linen was high class Egyptian cotton. We had a large free standing bath which was by far the best we experienced in South Africa.

I stayed overnight at the hotel on a business trip in Stellenbosch.
I was surprised by the spacious rooms on offer, which was wonderful. It was unexpected from a boutique hotel.
Modern, clean, friendly service and good food (I'm not a wine drinker so cannot attest to this), I can see why this is part of the Preferred Group of Hotels.
Should I return to the area again, I will be sure to stay at the Devon Valley hotel.
