Reviewed August 12, 2010

The Devon Valley hotel was situated in a lovely valley quite close to Stellenbosch and had great views. The staff were all quite efficient and friendly too.

The rooms were attractive, clean and spacious, with a lovely outdoor seating area, but somehow it was like a hotel which was part of a chain - like Holiday inn.

We decided to eat there as we had paid a dinner bed and breakfast rate and we didn't really want to go out after a long day.

The food was good, and luckily we were able to ask to pay extra to order from a menu as the main offering was a buffet. We weren't offered this option but had to ask for it.

In the end as my daughter and I only had a main course and the buffet was 3 course they didn't charge extra.

The buffet was quite curry based- but was apparently good ( well he went back for seconds!)

Breakfast again was a big buffet but they struggled to keep up as a large coach party were leaving.

If you just want a place to sleep and relax it's very clean and comfortable. My only complaint was that if felt a little bland and you had to drive to get anywhere.

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for your feedback after your stay over with us at the Devon Valley. I appreciate your feedback and I've already sent it through to our management team and their staff for follow up. I am worried that you experienced us as impersonal - 'like a large chain hotel'. We make every effort to create a homely atmosphere and as a team of staff and managers we're like a family working together in our 50 bedroom hotel - small enough to still offer the personal service, genuine warmth of hospitality and attention to detail. I therefore want to apologise to you on behalf of the team that you did not experience that during your stay over.

We had a tour group inhouse on that night (they normally have a Cape Malay buffet) and I suspect that there may not have been clear communication to you on the night by your waiter to explain the various options and what you are entitled to as part of your package rate. From your comments it is clear that you were happy with your dinner though.

I can assure you that our individual guests are as important to us as our tour groups or conference groups and that we are committed to offering the same level of focussed attention to everyone as far as is humanly possible. I do hope that we will still have the opportunity of welcoming you to our beautiful Devon Valley in the future. It is the ideal getaway spot if you want a tranquil Winelands retreat!

Kind regards,
Marlize Stander
Assistant General Manager

We felt exited from the second we arrived, Reception was nice and organised, there was someone ready to help us with luggage ext. even though it was raining. We stayed in a Double Luxury Room, 3 nights. Nice and quiet, fantastic views, spotless clean, Fantastic bathroom with lotions and potions, just what you want after a long flight.
The staff was great too, anything you need they bring in record time, considering we stayed at the far end of the estate.
Dinner at the hotel was just lovely, the food here is 5*, Nothing bland and mass produced. Everything is fresh. Breakfast was great too, huge selection and even better to have it outside on a sunny morning.
Try to avoid the dry-cleaning service, they press everything even if you ask not to, but they didn't charge me for the mishap.
I can recommend this Hotel, we had a great stay.

We had all our reservations made when we came to South Africa. The reservation we had in your area was with the Wedgeview. However, when we went there, it had experienced a fire, and so had to refund our money. We had a GPS. So we looked for lodging in the GPS. Your hotel was listed as a Protea Hotel. So we called and asked if rooms were available. When we got there, they explained to us that you were no longer a Protea Hotel. However, the standard of excellence seemed to equal or exceed the Protea. Every member of the staff was extremely friendly, and very helpful. The rooms were very large, and well-appointed. The food was also very good. We were very happy with our experience with the Devon Valley Hotel. Also, it was relatively close to the airport. We needed that as our stay was the last two days in South Africa. We would highly recommend your fine hotel to anyone staying in the area.

Just outside Stellenbosch - a short drive that is! as you drive up the short drive on the side of a hill you come to this beautiful secluded hotel set within the Sylvanvale Wineyards.
The buildings are all on one level with colonial style but modern rooms going off from the central reception area. The standard rooms are comfortable and stylish if not too large! with modern bathrooms. Our friends had a more expensive executive suite which was huge in comparison. The room we had was to the left of the reception and was quite basic with no view out of the window, but that didn't seem to matter as we paid for their Quality Time rate, which was just superb value for money, and didn't intend on spending too much time in there!
After booking in at the friendly reception, we were on a half board basis and there was some confusion with the evening meal rate. Basically you were allowed a set limit per head and paid for anything over that. It could have been a lot clearer at the time of booking, but to be honest the food was just out of this world and we certainly didn't mind paying a little extra for our indulgences.
After we had checked in we decided a cool drink on the hotel veranda would be in order. What a view! out over the winelands, with the clouds gripping the top of the mountain like a giant hand. We could have stayed there forever but dinner called!
I have rarely stayed in a hotel where the food was cooked and presented to such high standards for the price we paid. I can't say enough about it, it was worth visiting the place just for the food, and the ambiance and decor in the lounge and dining areas was just lovely!
Our package included a wine tasting in the hotel bar, which was expertly done by their sommelier.
Breakfast was taken in the colonial style dining rooms, and there was a vast array of dishes to choose from.
The grounds of the hotel were so peaceful, and it had a beautifully situated small pool.
Day 2 took us out with a company called Redwood Wine Tours.co.za Our guide was Keith van der schyff. What a gentleman! he picked us up and took us on a tour of Stellenbosch, then on to 7 vineyards in Stellenbosch and Franschoek. His knowledge was second to none, and after a lunch at Delheim and more tasting dropped us off at our hotel in the evening. I would thoroughly recommend him and his services, what a nice chap! and his rate was very reasonable.
We were originally contemplating staying in a guest house in the middle of Stellenbosch as we love to walk out at night and sample the local hospitality, however I think we made the right choice this time as we were on a two week hectic tour and the thing that struck me most about the Devon Valley (apart from the excellent food) was the ambiance of the place. Peaceful, laid back, stress free, simply wonderful.

We stayed 2 nights here and wish it could have been longer. We e-mailed ahead to say we were celebrating our 21st Wedding Anniversary. On arrival we found we had been given a fantastic room in the new block complete with a huge comfy bed (best all trip) a bathroom with walk in wet shower and free standing bath. The best was the wooden wall could be pushed back so you could sit in your bath and look over the stunning views from the patio windows down over the Devon Valley very decadent! In the room we had been left a small bottle of bubbly and 2 bottles of their own produced wine plus some lovely choc. cake. A lovely touch we thought.
The breakfast choice was excellent. However, the restaurant whilst lovely did not inspire us with their evening meals. Weds night was much better fresh cooked pizza outside (no we are not usually pizza lovers, but these were to die for huge and with lovely fresh ingredients.)
There is also a small but welcoming pool to cool off in after a day wine tasting or sightseeing!
Finally when we enquired about the possibility of wine tasting the hotel manager came out and gave us a personal history and tasting of their wines almost immediately. We left very much wiser and more informed. No more 'plonk' for us! All the staff were friendly and helpful. This hotel is a real little hidden gem.

we stayed here in May on the honeymoon package and it was okay. the hotel itself is nice enough, a quiet little retreat in the middle of vineyards and wineries. its a very relaxing place to stay for a few days if you have the time. surrounded by vines, close to plenty vineyards and stunning views of the mountain range on the terrace in front of the hotel where you can have a nice lunch with a lovely bottle of wine. it really is quite a nice place to stay.
i wouldn't recommend the honeymoon package though. not to be moaning but the room was only okay, nice size but not very romantic even with a four poster bed. the champagne reception was comical, a tiny bottle enought for 2 glasses. we had received proper complimentary bottles (750ml) from previous hotels we had stayed in so the fact that they advertise a champagne reception and then give you this tiny bottle is ridiculous.
the couples massages are not actually in the hotel itself, we were driven to a sister hotel about 30 minutes away because the nearby spa that does the massages was booked out. the massages were nice but not really worth the hassle of driving all that way, especially when there is so many spa's in all the other nice hotels in south africa
i do not feel we got even close to value for the money we paid but i would definitely recommend the hotel to stay in just don't fork out for the honeymoon package like we did.

p.s. make sure and do the bubbly and nougat tasting down the road in J.C. Leroux (Sparkling Wine Vineyard). has to be pre-booked. its fantastic!!
