this is a nice hotel and we got a great deal on expedia but it is out of the way in stellenbosch and so you need a car or driver. Also the wine and other activities are really poor - skip them entirely. They charged us US $10 per person each way for a literally 8 minute ride into town and wanted to charge us $300 for a half day tour of the winelands. We found a wonderful guide for $200 who gave us a 6 hour tour. They also talked us out of spending time in Stellenbosch as they said there was nothing to do - not so - it had wonderful shopping and resturants and so we wasted our time there. They also were very unaccomadating in regards to cashing traveler's checks and the "star attraction restaurant" Moyo was a buffet with a frat party atmosphere - if you were drunk or with a large group it likely was great but otherwise it was a zoo - awful!

Situation was lovely and rooms were very attractive. Bathroom had a slightly sewage-type smell about it, but we only stayed for one night and therefore didn't pursue it. The hotel has been very sympathetically built - the architecture is lovely and the streets within the hotel complex are very attractive. The furniture and decor in the main bar is lovely - very stylish. Swimming pools quite small for the number of rooms. However there are many other things to do on the estate - bird sanctuary, cheetahs, picnic etc. Room cost was £110 per night, which seemed very expensive for South Africa, and in light of this cost, the room didn't meet expectations. We went to the moyo for dinner which was a different and enjoyable experience. Unfortunately one of our party got food poisoning. There were many of us, and only one food poisoning incident, but I felt that I should mention it since it did happen. Hotel was nice, although slight 'theme park' and not cheap, however if you are happy to pay this, then I would not discourage you from visiting.

This hotel was fantastic! We were on honeymoon and got a huge room with two balconies!! The rooms are old style but really beautiful and the staff are fantastic! Nothing was too much to ask for!

The cheetah sanctury is great although a little small but for a small fee you get to go into the cheetah area and rub the cheetah's which is well worth it! There is horse riding through the wine lands which is spectacular and a must do! Also we did a wine tour from the hotel where a driver brought us around to three different vineyards which was fantastic and we got to taste loads of different wines! if you do the wine tour asked to be taken to Boschendal vineyards its a pretty spectacular setting. Food was spectacular in the restaurant at night and breakfast was fantastic also!

We also went to Moyo one of the nights and honestly don't waste your money! While the food was good the entertainment was spread too far apart!!! As a whole this was the only part we didn't like! When the entertainment did come on it was good but there are much nicer restaurants in Stellembosh (about 5 mins driving or taxi from hotel) that would be a better use of your time. Moyo was terrible and not worth the money so stay away is my advise! Otherwise the hotel is fantastic 2 days would be plenty to stay here!

We have just returned from a 5 day stay at Spier. It is a really lovely place. The grounds are extensive and absoloutley beautiful, the staff are very friendly and helpful and our room was huge and had every amenity you could want.

The hotel rooms are set out to look like a village. We were very suprised on checking into our room to find that it was massive. OK, it is probably what you would call "shabby chic" (rustic) but had all the mod cons: bath robes, "his and hers" sinks, fridge, coffee making facilities, air con and ceiling fan, and best of all a HUGE terrace!! The main pool area is gorgeous, with comfortable loungers, towels provided and waiter drinks/food service. It was never crowded when we were there. There are also a number of small pools dotted around the complex that can be used if desired.

We ate in the main restaurant for breakfast ( an extensive buffet) and our evening meals and the food was delicious. Service was a little slow but that only added to our feeling of relaxation. We had two of the best steaks we have ever eaten there! The restaurant is also open for lunch which you can take any time up to 6.00pm. There are other dining options including Moyo (an outdoor African dining experience), the Deli (which provides everything you could want for a picnic) and Eight, an organic food restaurant.

During our stay we visited the on-site Cheetah Outreach Centre and the Birds of Prey/Eagle Encounter facility and of course, did some wine tasting.

We found the staff all to be extremely polite and very willing to help. Nothing was too much trouble.

We would highly recommend this lovely hotel and can't wait for a return visit.

Stayed here for 4 nights over the New year period and really enjoyed our stay. We had a great room on the ground floor backing onto a small garden with a small pool shared amoung another 5/6 rooms. The place is huge with lots of different things to do. The Cheetah and Bird encounter place is great. They have lakes and a river, lots of things for the kids to see. Big lawns for them to run around in. The food was good with service friendly but a little slow. Chilled out atmosphere. Really enjoyed out time there.

Spier is just a few miles outside Stellenbosch and the hotel is part of the Spier estate, which has extensive vinyards, a cheeta outreach centre, a raptor centre and other attractions. The "rooms" are in a "village" a short walk from reception, in a beautiful setting. All the facilities are very good and the service was fine. I can recommend their wine too!

We spent two nights here in a superior room overlooking the river. The room was beautiful with a huge balcony, however the weather was cold & wet. We booked our eveing meal in the hotels main restaurant in advance & the booking was confirmed as we checked in, however when we got to the restaurant we had no table. We had to wait 1hr 30 mins for a table, I wasn't pleased! It was worth the wait as the food was fabulous. During the week the hotel is popular with corporate groups on training days/conferences therefore they dominated the restaurant & the bar area, not great if you want a romantic meal.
Our second night we ate at Moyo but we were so full from our lunch that we hardly ate anything. The atmosphere in the main tent is great, it really is worth a trip.
We each had a massage in the spa which was delightful.
