What a pleasant surprise our stay a Spier Hotel was. We would usually avoid these lager places, and favour small family run guesthouses. Nevertheless I ended up make the booking at Spier Hotel basically because we believe this winery produces the finest Chenin Blanc there is, which makes an excellent excuse for staying a couple of nights. It turned out to be one of the nicest stays on this road trip in the Western Cape. The rooms are spacious, tastefully decorated and clean. It is however the beauty, from the surrounding park to the extensive collection of contemporary art that deserves the visitors’ attention.

Our presumptions about bigger resorts were put to shame by the attentive staff and a capacity to cater for individual wishes. During our stay the hotel restaurant’s a la carte dinner menu was replaced by a buffet. However, upon our wish the a la carte menu was kindly made available to us. We certainly appreciated this fine service and the delicious food. Spire is a wonderful family experience.

Also, our gratitude to the staffer who found our camera and made sure it was returned to security so that we luckily got it back. Thank you!

Starting our honeymoon at Spier was a real treat. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome. The staff were exceptional friendly without fail. Right from the lady cleaning the room to the staff at breakfast, the reception staff and the porters all the staff seemed happy and pleased to help.

The room was magnificent with a really comfy bed and a great bathroom. Breakfast was great as was the turn down service... All of this in a magnificent area insured that we had a fantastic stay.

Will definitely be back

During beginning of November my husband and I spent 4days at Spier. What a highly recommended stay it was ! As ex-Stellenbosch residents, Spier is wellknown to us and it was a lovely return for us. The food is outstanding, the service professional and the accommodation spacious, modern and, above all, private. The position on the Paden Powell Road makes for easy access to the N2 to Cape Town and Stellenbosch is a mere 10 minutes away. The hotel offers more than enough for guests to stay just there though. Walking, cycling, birdwatching, winetasting, visiting the wildbird sanctuary, enjoying your private patio, the spa, the lovely variety of public areas (both in- and outdoors), gardens and swimmingpools - all of that and more without ever having to get in your car! We will for sure be back.

Room Tip: Rooms on the ground floor have lovely, big and very private patios, leading onto the gardens and poo...

This hotel was booked as part of a honeymoon package by trailfinders. The hotel is lovely. Reception area and bar area filled with Africa art and have a modern vibe. Restaurant area and outside area was the same with comfy seats and lovely views

When we arrived we were greeted in a warm and friendly manner and also got a lovely glass of wine to taste. We then were taken to our room and made welcome

The room was slightly dated and not very clean. There was a lot of dead insects, but had a tv, nice balcony and outside area and we had wifi.

We had lunch and a buffet dinner there. Lunch was lovely. Buffet the first night was average but better the second night.
Staff were all super friendly and very helpful.

Only real downside was as a honeymooner we felt it was very family oriented and packed with kids running wild everywhere so quite loud and chaotic at times. Not very romantic or relaxing. It is peak season so that's no surprise but it was frustrating and we would not recommend here for honeymooners at this time of year. It is far more family suited.
We would recommend taking a drive up to Franshoek from here for lunch as lots of nice places to see there.

Dear Jonny & Jules,

Thank you for your most positive review, we are very happy to hear that you have enjoyed your stay at Spier.

We have taken note of the comments you have made that we can improve on and the team will double their efforts to make this happen.

Indeed the hotel has welcomed many families over the last few holiday weeks, creating a festive buzz in the public areas. I am sorry to hear that we did not recognise your need for more privacy as we would have loved to show you any of our five courtyard pool areas, that are more secluded than the main pool.

When you book your first wedding anniversary stay with us next year we will gladly arrange for a private dinner in the woods for you to showcase our romantic side.

Please do let me know if I can assist you directly with making the booking.

Kind regards,

Me and my family have been privileged to enjoy the Speir Resort several times. Indeed, this place became our favourite holiday destination and we would gladly recommend it to anybody who is keen to experience service excellence, great hospitality, delicious food, tranquil environment, exuberant ambiance and picturesque scenery. If we were given the oppurtunity to rate the Speir Hotel, it would most definitely acquire five-star rating. It is evident that the management and staff are working tireously to meet and exceed the expectations of the guests who come from all over the world.

Thank you,

Maria & Milcho Damianov.

This is a five-star hotel on a wine farm on a huge plot of land. There's room to cycle around on bicycles left at the entrance, swimming pools shared by clusters of rooms, several cafes and restaurants spread over the farm/hotel. There's of course the wine tasting that includes, on special request, a pairing with chocolate.

The room we had was large and everything worked. Everything worked. The taps did feel loose but it seems to be a problem common everywhere in SA. You turn on the tap, nothing happens, so it turn on more, water gushes out, you then turn back to reduce the flow. If you now turn off the tap and turn it back to the position where you last had the flow level you wanted, water will not come out. I suppose the threat of water rationing doesn't exist.

My only slight complaint was the "desk" which was a Chinese-like table that was not balanced and very small. It's not a work desk.

The room was a good walking distance from the reception and dining area. Fortunately, it did not rain when we needed to walk, although the weather did look threatening.

Food was pretty good although the breakfast did not vary at all during my stay.

Overall, it's a nice relaxing place.
