As a long time visitor to SA and a fan of SA white wines, I have visited quite a lot of wineries. Over the years, I have seen wine tastings become more and more commercial and touristy. I guess for most tourists, it is certainly a item on the programme that cannot be missed and most wineries do take advantage of that. Though not Thelema. The winery doesn't offer elaborate tours or restaurants. I guess they focus on their main goal: wine making. And that is what they do very good. I am a big fan of their Sauvignon Blanc after I have drunk it at the Victoria Falls Hotel in Zimbabwe.
Reception at the winery is most friendly and quiet. As it was a wednesday before noon, there were hardly any other customers. The view from the tasting room is gorgeous and so is the personal approach of the lady pourer.
Also, it is one of the few wineries that is interested in growing organic wines.

Thelema changed our way of thinking about wooded chardonnay! Ed's Reserve is special. I wish we could buy a pallet full to bring home to Australia. The vineyard felt like we were back home with eucalyptus trees everywhere and even seeping into the wines, try "The Mint" Cab Sav. You'll enjoy this classy joint.

On entering the estate one can see why these wines are really good, it all starts in the vineyard, one cannot make good wine from badly grown grapes! The attention to detail can also be witnessed in the tasting room and cellar. Have always had a pleasant experience at this estate and and their wines have always been very good, a nice range of cultivars is an added enjoyment. Well Done.

We visited Thelema because we can get some of their wines here in BC - good and good value for the money - and were interested in trying their others. We were really impressed. We got there just before 3:00 which was the posted closing time but we were given our full tasting without being hurried. The server - a student in the wine science program at the U. of Stellenbosch - was very personable and helpful. The wines were excellent. We got to try out the "Mint" cabernet side by side with the standard cabernet and could taste the difference that the eucalyptus trees adjacent to the vineyard from which those grapes come make to the wine. We were really impressed with the least expensive of the offerings - Mountain Red for R60. We were so impressed with all the offerings that it was difficult to pick several bottles to take with us back to our vacation rental to enjoy for the balance of our stay in Stellenbosch. We brought the "flagship" red blend home with us to age before we drink it in a few years. By the way, it was a lovely spot to visit.

We enjoyed the wine tasting, great value at ZAR 25, particualrly given the generous measures. We were fortunate in that it was relatively quiet when we visited so the lovely Crescenda had time to talk us through each wine, which she did with passion, humour and great knowledge. The tasting room was decorated with local art and books, with a balcony which affords a wonderful vista over the estate and mountains beyond, which make this an experience rather than a simple wine tasting. Great range of red and white wines with something to suit every taste.

We ordered a couple of cases with the assistance of Crescenda, and we're surprised and delighted to find they'd arrived here in the UK within days, superb service.
