We arrived in Cape Town on Saturday after a long 19 hour journey from New York. We arrived at our destination, showered, changed into fresh clothes and had a few hours to tour the area in the late afternoon around 3:00. Since we were staying near Stellenbosch, we decided to take a drive into the wine country. Having heard of the Waterford estate, we simply followed some signs along the major route that wends its way through the wine country and easily found the Waterford winery. We were happy to see that it was still open at 3:45 since many of them close early on Saturday. After parking our car, our lovely "greeter" invited us into the winery (we were too late for the tour) to sample the wines in a very cozy setting. We opted for the 8 wine tasting menu (4 whites and 4 reds plus three chocolates for the last two reds and a dessert wine), While only one of the wines really suited our taste (their cabernet), we did enjoy the final dessert wine with the chocolates and the entire experience of sttting in this lovely, warm setting on our first afternoon in South Africa. We also had some time to take a walk through the vineyard which was quite beautiful.
