Description: Airy and light, the restaurant overlooks lush gardens and leads onto a sheltered terrace for alfresco dining. It is in this stimulating setting that resident chef Lucas Carstens presents his menu of fresh, modern cuisine grounded in the French classics. Lucas has enormous respect for the quality and provenance of each ingredient that comes into his kitchen and takes pride in working with ethical producers and suppliers who share his philosophy of excellence. Complementing Makaron Restaurant is M Bar, an inviting lounge-style bar with the decadent ambience of a Parisian salon.

Superb inventive cuisine with a French twist in wine country. Excellent wine list. Sit outside if possible.

“Great food in well designed surroundings”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

The first thing that hits you is the design of the building which has obviously had a lot of time spent on it. The dining room itself is stunning, although I found the bar area to be a bit of a mish-mash of design.

The choice of wines was superb and credit to the restaurant manager / sommelier who was extremely knowledgeable and helpful with our choice. She also helped with some of our food choices and she knew the intricacies of the dishes as if she had cooked them herself.

The standout dishes for us were the monkfish and the pork. The message in a bottle, prior to the fish on the hot rocks was a nice interesting touch.

“Utmost pretension to little good effect”
Reviewed January 7, 2014 via mobile

I live in Manhattan, and have traveled widely, so I have been to my share of the world's top restaurants. And this is certainly not one of them. I simply cannot understand all the rave reviews, other than to think people are taken in by the extraordinary pretentiousness of this restaurant. The restaurant has explained its decor below, so I will not go into what a mish-mash it is. But room–dividing curtains that look as though they belong in a cheap motel, and unarranged stems just stuck in a vase, surely do not belong in a place that prides itself on design. On to the food -- An "amuse bouche" consisted of tiny strips of salmon trout to be cooked by the patron on a hot rock at the table. But the salmon just stuck to the rock (I saw others struggling too) and it was served with disgustingly gelatinous dollops of dill "gelee." The poached duck egg with duck biltong sounded like a good idea, but the egg was served cold, with little sign of any biltong. Surely one does not need to go to culinary school to understand that a very runny poached egg is disgusting when served cold! To give the restaurant its due, the springbok was delicious, although the potato espume was overly rich. But it is the totally over-the-top overall pretentiousness that does this place in. Really, do yourself a favor and skip it. There are so many other lovely restaurants in the area.

“Truly outstanding”
Reviewed January 6, 2014

We went to Makaron, as we had read the reviews on this site. The food was very creative. We took the menu, consisting of two entrees per person, a main dish and a desert, all to be individually chosen from the menu. The duck egg and the squid cannelloni were excellent and the arrangement on the plates was done in an artful manner. The only thing that paled (a little bit) was the cheese cake desert. Highly recommended!
