“Imaginative cooking”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

This is the third time I have visited Casparus and have never been disappointed.
The oysters in Cape Classique (champagne equivalent) are simply outstanding. Still a lovely sea flavor and not too rich on a bed of potato mash. Simple - but simple with quality ingredients is always reliable and rewarding.
Our other dishes were good but not outstanding - the lamb rump was too rare. Rare or too rare might be smart in "chef talk" but seems always to result in meat that is a bit rubbery and not as tasty as it might have been if more care had been taken. Pink but not over rare is the answer.
(hope the chef reads this!)
Every thing else was good puds included.
I notice another comment re service, and must agree. VERY Amateur.

“Upmarket dining in funky venue.”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

Wonderful salmon with the most tasty sauce! Good service, good wine - lovely and worthwhile! It is an upmarket venue with concrete floors, artwork and modern setting. Not very romantic but the food is lovely.

“Second to none”
Reviewed May 15, 2013

When one of South Africa's most innovative celebrity chefs (Ethienne Bonthuys) makes your food, and you're sitted in a restaurant designed by one of SA's most innovative and famous architects ((Johan Slee) and all around you can see stunning art by Strydom van der Merve..... and you've been served by Joeke... (She's a student so I'm not sure she's always there) ..
what would you experience ?
Nothing less than a touch of a genius !
Delicious food (Belgian style), great atmosphere, wonderful service, excellent choice of wines, and....
affordable prices ! -
in my opinion: best value for money in Stellenbosch !

“Nightmare experience”
Reviewed March 29, 2013

I happened to have been invited to Casparus twice in the past two weeks by different people. Each time we had visitors from other places in the company. All I want to say here about the first visit is that the service was so indifferent and inadequate that the host decided to pay a tip far below the standard.

The second experience was the real nightmare! It started off quite amicably, but people started complaining about the service. The waiters seem untrained. Friendly, but lacking skills that are regarded as basic, especially for a restaurant, one would think, with such a good reputation.

When one of the guests decided to discuss this discreetly with the owner, he behaved in the most abominable way. Shouting and swearing at her. When one of the other guests tried to calm him down, he turned on her, again shouting and swearing loudly for all to hear. He shouted at her to go back to her country and used the specific words that are very offensive to that specific nationality. We first thought he was drunk, but was assured that it was not so. He used the most insulting swear words in Afrikaans.

This owner is known to be volatile and rude, but what we experienced on this evening was
atrocious and traumatising. I have been to many restaurants, good and bad, in South Africa and abroad. I have never before felt compelled to write a bad review, but this behaviour should not be tolerated. A patron should be allowed to give feedback or criticism, especially if it is done in a polite and civilised manner.

My review then of this restaurant? Food: excellent. Setting: interesting, but cold in winter and hot in summer. Service: mostly disappointing (I have eaten at Casparus quite a few times, and there has also been satisfactory service). The owner: if he carries on like this, he is going to ruin himself....which would be a great pity, because his food is really good.

“Great food - to small kitchen”
Reviewed March 29, 2013

The 4 of us spent an evening at casparus. We had a very warm welcome and they gave us an excellent table. It's just a great venue, the wine list is good, the food excellent and the prices are even better. Hardly remember having such a tasty and good dinner for so little money. Only negativ - it took ages to get the main course. They just have too many tables for the size of the kitchen. Hope that they will do something about it - it's just not good enough to wait for 45 to 60 minutes without getting anything onto the table.
Will come back and test..
