Description: Exceptional food and drink at Oude Werf has been a Stellenbosch institution for more than 200 years. The dishes of the first inn’s Tant Betjie Wium delighted her guests in the 1800’s and today, this tradition lives on in a new restaurant, designed by top SA architects Revel Fox, which opened in 2014. Built over the foundations of the hotel’s famous 17th Century churchyard site (still visible today) the restaurant is centred on a charming in-situ kitchen. There are touches of period detail recalling the hotel’s heritage and even a huge tree is incorporated into the spacious interior. Outdoors, a vine-covered courtyard dining area with water features is a reminder of the ‘lei-water’ canals that once existed here. Just off the courtyard, a period-style lounge, with bar and barista station opens onto the hotel’s central gardens and pool deck - another quiet spot for a glass of wine, cocktail or coffee. The restaurant’s signature dining style is Cape Traditional food with a contemporary gourmet ‘twist’ and features varied menus with classic dishes showcasing the flavours and ingredients of the area, complemented by an extensive selection of wines from this celebrated region. From easy breakfasts, light seasonal lunches, to hearty dinners or baked delights, Oude Werf Restaurant offers a delicious sample of Cape cuisine in a relaxing, convivial setting that’s essentially Stellenbosch.

“lovely little restaraunt”
Reviewed October 30, 2012

This is a really nice restaraunt with friendly and attentive staff. I am told the food is authentic cape malay and my South African partner loved her food.

I must admit it was not to my taste - but that could be my choice - hence the good rating.

Could not fault the presentation and service.

Nice setting in the courtyard or inside the 'Oude Werf' hotel. Food was great as was the service. Staff were able to provide everything we needed.

“excellent dinner”
Reviewed October 15, 2012

The ambience, decor, food and service were a true delight. We felt welcomed, looked after, but not overpowered. The food was delicious, beautifully cooked, the wine good and the service was friendly, fast and couldn't be faulted.

“Good food”
Reviewed October 11, 2012

Another great restaurant and even thought it is attached to a hotel, it retains independence with the quality and personalisation of the food. We were no trouble to the staff (there were 7 adults and two children aged 2 and 3) who made time to make us feel welcome and also seat us where the children could move around without upsetting others. Well presented dishes and wine suggestions too.

“Good food”
Reviewed June 22, 2012

Stayed in the Oude Werf hotel and had breakfast and a lunch in the restaurant. Lunch was fantastic - traditional with a twist. The bobotie wrap was a winner and the chicken bunny chow really tasted very authentic Durban style. The breakfasts were also very very good and had nice options. Would however been nice if the fireplace was lit through out the day - just to create some ambiance.
