Description: In November 2007 Overture Restaurant, situated on Hidden Valley Wines - a wine farm anchored into the side of the Stellenbosch hills - opened its doors for the very first time. Starting from humble beginnings, Overture soon became a destination for great food, service and wines. Since then, Chef Owners Bertus Basson and Craig Cormack have taken Overture to new heights with accolades as prestigious as being in the Eat Out top 10 for five years in a row and acquiring three stars in the Rossouw's Restaurant guide for four years running. You will find Bertus behind the pots at Overture while Craig focuses on his salt range, Amouleh.

“I will come back but the risotto was a mistake”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

We had lunch here last September. The expectation was high because the restaurant is considered one of the top in South Africa. Good service, very nice location, good food but not exceptional. Anyway, good enough to come back. The only real disappointing is for the "risotto alla Milanese". Risotto is I think the most difficult "primo piatto" to cook, talking about the Italian cuisine.
First of all it was overcooked, than I can accept the smoked feta cheese and the grilled leeks put on top of the risotto, like a touch of the chef, but the combination with the pickled onions is something that doesn't exist and really completely wrong.

“The Best Wedding Ever”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

This secluded paradise is nestled on the west facing slopes of the Helderberg Mountain range, with panoramic views of the Stellenbosch Valley and Table Mountain. Combine this magical setting with vineyards, olive groves, almond orchards, beautiful natural vegetation and you have the most perfect venue for a wedding.

We got married in the gorgeous barrel cellar at Hidden Valley and had our reception at their signature restaurant Overture, (the brain child of Chef Bertus Basson). You can’t go much higher up the culinary ladder in the Cape than Bertus Basson, who is truly the unsung hero of real food, colour and flavour. Overture is his eagle’s nest where he serves up some of the best food in the country. Bertus and his team put together the most outstanding canapés followed by a delicious 4 course menu that delighted us and our guests (who had travelled from all corners of the globe). The 20 children we had attending our wedding were treated to their own special menu which included mini hot dog canapés.

Our wedding could not have been more perfect and our guests have gushed so enthusiastically about everything, raving that the food was some of the best they have eaten anywhere in the world and that all in all, our wedding was up there among the most amazing they have ever been too. Our gratitude goes to Bertus and his team. Thank you for our fairytale wedding.

(The only tip I have for future brides considering having their wedding here is that if you are a control freak like me, you might like to consider hiring an outside event coordinator to ensure you get the individual attention that any demanding bride needs when planning her big day ;-))

“Same view, worse quality”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

In Overture we came last evening after one year and a great experience. Unfortunatelly, we have been dissapointed by the quality of food and services. If the starter was great, the main course was too salty, while the waiter seemed all the time completelly lost... Of course, the view stays and the bookings are reccomended!

Overture has set a benchmark by which other restaurants - even those higher up the rankings - are judged by myself. The ambience, food and service are excellent and management goes out of its way to cater to the individual needs. Everything is sourced as locally as possible, which is laudable.

However, much to my disappointment, the restaurant has become rather inaccessible to regular locals during peak seasons. Understandably, holiday makers know well in advance when their itenararies would allow them the opportunity to dine out.

How disappointing it thus is when requesting a reservation, only to be told 'we are fully booked'. One would expect the front line staff to indicate an alternate date, a cancellation list etc. I have difficulty seeing the sense in marketing, only to make access impossible.

Yes, foreign tourists do bring in more than revenue, but don't forget the locals who return time and again.
