I stayed at the backpackers and the staff was very friendly and the location was great. The rooms were clean but very basic. Bathroom was clean too but general condition was in a bad state. For instance the shower didn't have a fitting and the shower curtain was too short. The big problem with this place is that you will probably not get a good night's rest because everyone seems to stay here because it's so cheap! I also witnessed some fights there as the bar is downstairs and they sell the booze for (you guessed it!) very cheap so people tend to consume more than they can handle. This place is very popular with stag / buck parties. I would recommend other establishments to stay at if you want to avoid the noise and the fighting and get a good night's rest. There are plenty of other places you can stay at which is still affordable but crucially avoids the riff raff....

Hi JMSBP,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review.
We thank you for your comments both positive and negative. In the time since your stay(I'm not sure when it was), we have re-done our bathrooms. All bathrooms were fitted with new showers, new shower curtains(longer ones :)), bath mats and toilet mats on the 15th of May 2012. It was just for a short period and unfortuntely during your stay the shower fittings were not there. We do apologise for this.
With regards to pricing, our room and dorm prices are very much in-line with what the other backpackers in Stellenbosch have to offer despite our central location.
Our bar and coffee shop in our reception is well priced to cater for backpackers who are very often on a tight budget, it is not our intention to have everyone consume too much and thus make a noise. We are sorry that this may have occured during your stay, I have instructed all my night staff to monitor this and will soon be putting up signs for our guests to keep noise down after 10pm and to keep in mind other guests at the hostel.

We hope this will have addressed the negative issues experienced at iKhaya and will oneday be able to welcome you here once again.

Kind Regards

Matt

Ikhaya is a workmanlike spot to crash in Stellenbosch. Not great. But decent.
The front of the house is basically a small bar / internet cafe, complete with chain smokers, alcoholics, and hangers on, 24/7. The back of the house is very secure, with two wrought iron gates that lock between the street and the rooms.
The rooms themselves have seen better days... shabby, used and abused, but clean and spacious.
I watched a local woman attack a man with a knife right out in front of this place in November 2011. She stabbed him several times and was bleeding herself--yet no one in Ikhaya seemed particularly interested or concerned--leading me to believe that this type of chicanery is commonplace in this part of town.
Walking distance to the old quarter, with tons of great shops and restaurants. It felt a bit overpriced @ R490/night for two people but, hey, this is Stellenbosh...

Hi Jared,

Thank very much for taking the time to review our property.
We take all reviews in a fairly serious manner, weather positive or negative, so we can work on our weaknesses and work to our strengths.
We are fairly concerned about the stabbing incident you mentioned. This is not commonplace here in the centre of Stellenbosch, and should have been reported to the police. None of my staff who worked in November can recall the incident, so I'm not sure they witnessed it happening.
Anyway, that's neither here nor there.
Security is one of our strenghts here, we have also installed a high tech CCTV camera system to better moniter all entrances and corridors. So thank you for mentioning this.
We will also soon be embarking on a refurbishments in the rooms, this will rid the rooms of the "experienced" feel you mentioned. We have already done so in our bathrooms. :).

With regards to pricing. I can understand at R490 you may feel it is a bit steep. It is however a en-suite triple room with full kitchen and bathrooms facilities, so the normal per person price is a bit less then what you experienced. We have however learned from this and will look at a plan to implement a better pricing structure concerning couples and our self-catering units.

Regards

Matt

I stayed there with my dad, we had such a nice time. Lovely balcony with a view on Stellenbosch. Tasty and cheap breakfast downstairs in the lounge area. Perfectly clean room. But my highlight would be the staff which made a perfect experience!

Having stayed in more than a few backpacker lodges in the Cape Town area, I found Ikhaya to be unique in more than a few different ways. The first would be in the lobby, which also has a small but stocked bar, TV's which are constantly showing the latest soccer, rugby, cricket or Formula One event, and a useful internet cafe with Wi-Fi connection. The lobby is small, however very friendly, as both locals of Stellenbosch as well as travelers from around the world frequent this area. They also have a kitchen with a very well priced menu. I spent much of my time in the bar, sitting at one of the few comfortable couches talking with other travelers, or taking in the Stellenbosch evening, as the bar is wide open to Bird Street and across from the town lawn (Die Braak.) Now that I have decided to live in Stellenbosch, I find myself continuing to visit the bar at Ikhaya to meet new people, as well as keep in touch with those, who like myself now call Stellenbosch home, but find the atmosphere at the bar in Ikhaya to be quite inviting. One other part of my stay here which I quite enjoyed was the rooms, one in which had a second story patio which you could look out to Bird Street. It was quite nice to wind the evening down watching the people of Stellenbosch go about their evening, and taking in the vibe of the city.

Room Tip: Try to get one with a patio to the outside
