“Bitter sweet”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2012

The service was slow, but the waiter warned us upfront that there were some issues in the kitchen. The atmosphere was fantastic and I would really recommend an outside table to allow you to take in the street atmosphere of Stellenbosch.

Unfortunately the food was not up to standard. The hamburger patty was tasteless and the sauce was too thin. The piza was good. Maybe the reason for the sub-standard food was due to the issues in the kitchen?

“'Gesellig', as the Dutch say”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2012

This Dutch-inflected restaurant (serving such Dutch concotions as bitterballen, kroketten and patattenoorlog) in the now madly popular Ryneveld Street area of Stellenbosch, offers good value for money and a vey pleasant ambience. First prize, on a fine evening, are the tables in the street, offering a lively prospect on this little corner of Stellenbosch. On a coolish evening the interior is cosy and attractive; on an in-between (or windy) evening the courtyard in the back (afer which the restaurant is named) offers a refuge, though the least appealing of the three sections.
Apart from the Dutch specialities, Binnenhof has a failry extensive menu, weighted towards pizzas and pastas, but also wtih some more substantial mains like bobotie and lamb stew. On the two occasions I've eaten here I've opted for the pizzas, and can vouch for them: nice thin crust, imaginative toppings. The wine list is decent and decently priced.
The menu declares 'Good food is worth waiting for', which is a good move, since when the restaurant is packed to capacity the wait is quite long. Service, though friendly, is quite slow, indeed often not available; I suspect staffing is geared to slow periods rather than rush hour.
Don't go here on your way to a show or the airport. But if you have a leisurely evening to spend in Stellenbosch, you could do far worse than the Binnenhof. And in summer, book in advance, though you could take a chance on a table if you're passing by.

“Great place, good value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2011

We had a bottle of wine the first day and came back to Binnenhof the day later for dinner. The outdoor seating was not possible due to strong winds, so we opted for the indoor patio. They have a real wood burning pizza oven in there as well. This was our first taste of Bobotie and we loved it. So much so, that we ordered another round. At the end, the owner gave us the recipe and chatted with us for a while. The total bill came to ZAR 350, or EUR 35, which is a joke for the quality of the food and wine. Would go back any time!

“No more visit”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 21, 2011

A very charmig lady served us two burgers, that were their special food. One was OK, but the second was more than welldone, completly hard and tastless. We told the lady and she said "yes it is" and nothing happened until we said we want a new.
