We decided to visit Bergplaas after having seen pics and reading info about Bergplaas on the website but ended up leaving after one night (we planned on staying two nights).
Problem 1: The website is very misleading. Bergplaas camp is definitely not ”true relaxation” or “feng shue” as the website claims. The owner insisted that all photos on the website were taken from the campsite. But, when we emailed him specific photos from his website and asked where exactly in the campsite these photographs were taken from, he did not respond.
Problem 2: The campsites are very close together and not ‘spacious’ as claimed in the website.
Problem 3: We were surrounded by drunk students, playing music until after 1am. We even had a drunk student fall on our tent. He asked to be ‘let in’ – making my fiance’ feel rather unsafe!
Problem 4: The campsite boarders a very grotty suburb of Stellenbosch - we could hear drag racing and barking dogs well into the early hours of the morning, so don’t expect to be in natural peace and quiet.
Needless to say, we left after one night, having paid for two. After approaching the camp manager and explaining why we would be leaving early, he refused to pay us back the money for our second night. We subsequently emailed the owner of Bergplaas, explaining the situation but he saw no reason for a refund. Campsites like this are a terrible advert for Western Cape – there are much better places, run by honest people, that can make your stay a very memorable one.
