“Probably better than sleeping on the street”
Reviewed February 8, 2010

I stopped by this place to have a look before deciding on another hotel. I have stayed in hostels that were nicer. Whomever took the pictures for the B&B's website is VERY good at angles and trick photography. Moldy bathrooms, peeling paint, white laminate cabinets, tiny TVs with no remotes, and old linens are just some of the amenities awaiting you. This place is old - some people might like to call it cozy or charming. I would call it rundown. Like the sound of rushing water? You'll hear it in the walls whenever someone flushes a toilet or takes a shower. The balcony on the back of the building sags a good 4-6" in the middle. There's no way it would pass a building safety inspection in the US or Europe. You'll hear tons of traffic if you have a room facing the street. Stay here if you must, but know that the quality is more of a hostel than an Inn.

Our guest house is a registered National Monument dating back to the 1840s.
The "water running through the walls" is the plumbing dating back to said era.
We are a 3 star registered establishment and recently had our grading re- approved. This includes quality checks for linen, paint and so on. We would never have passed such a stringent test with such defects as mentioned by reviewer.
We are extremely centrally situated and a certain degree of traffic noise is logically to be expected (especially for the street facing rooms.)
The "sagging balcony" was deliberately built for the dual purpose of providing light as well as water drainage. It is made out of metal mesh and forms one of the main features of the guest house.
It was approved by our local municipality.
Our charming little guest house together with it's buzzy little coffee shop has been operational for 15 years. We remain ever popular and have many 1st world visitors returning year after year.

I couldn't recommend this guesthouse more highly! It's in a great location with clean, cozy rooms and, even better, the staff is outstanding. Arno and his team were friendly and helpful. When they learned that we were leaving early the next morning (prior to the arranged breakfast time) they packed us an amazing breakfast the night before. This is just one example of their excellent service. I'd return to Stellenbosch just to stay at de Oude Meul again.

Just what we needed, attended a wedding in the Winelands and did not wish to drive so far back to the city afterwards - this was the perfect accommodation for us, comfortable, central, affordable.

Above a coffee shop right in the middle of town. Unlike many of the B&Bs we looked at around town, this is easily within walking distance of all the best restaurants. The rooms are small, with large balconies overlooking the street. However, they are clean and tidy with fresh flowers in the room, and this made this one of the best value places we stayed in South Africa. The off-street parking is a couple of blocks away, and breakfast is in a cafe downstairs (same owner).

This is a great place to stay in Stellenbosch. Though the rooms are a bit small, it's very clean and cozy and has very friendly staff. The big balconies compare the smaller room inside and the location is great right in the middle of town.
Lovely breakfast and good coffee in the downstairs coffeehouse.
