We were two couples - one from Tanzania and one from Scotland - and our first destination in the western Cape was Aan Dorpstraat. We picked this guest house on the strength of other reviews on Trip Advisor and we weren't disappointed. We chose Stellenbosch and Aan Dorpstraat as our first port of call as we'd travelled fairly long distances and it sounded like a very relaxed place to start. Our initial contact with Gwen when making the booking was extremely promising. She couldn't be more helpful. When we arrived at the guest house it was obvious that it wouldn't take long to relax. It's a tranquil location away from the main street; but walking distance from the centre and lots of restaurants and shops. Johan and Gwen are simply perfect hosts. Gwen falls over backwards to make bookings for restaurants, show you wine maps, book taxis when there is a lot of wine involved... Johan makes a mean breakfast. The smell of freshly baking bread has an unresistable draw in the morning despite the comfort of the beds. The rooms are incredibly comfortable with everything you could possibly require - down to the cookies with tea and coffee. Lots of personal touches. Just remembering the nougat... Lots of chat with Gwen and Johan around - breakfast was a a happy event every morning. This is just a treasure of a guest house and a perfect base to visit Stellenbosch and surrounds. Nothing is too much trouble for Gwen and Johan. They got our holiday off to the perfect start.

Others have said it all. Gwen and Johan are great hosts and run an excellent B&B. Very well appointed room. Gwen was happy to spend quite some time giving us helpful advice and we wish we could have stayed longer. Stellenbosch is an interesting town surrounded of course by by superb wineries in magnificent scenery.
Gwen & Johan got up early to wish us well for our return flight to the UK - much appreciated. Our flight was even more spacious than our room - less than 50 passengers on a 747 - a row each!

Spotlessness clean and with every conceivable extra in our large stylish rooms, our stay at Aan Dorpstraat was delightful. Ideally situated in a quiet but very central location, Gwen and Johan were the ideal hosts. Gwen talked and Johan cooked! As a consequence we were told of all the best places to visit, tour and eat whilst feasting on a wonderful freshly cooked breakfast including home baked bread. Nothing was too much trouble and their warm hospitality and kindness made our stay in Stellenbosch one to remember. Cannot recommend Aan Dorpstraat highly enough.

Room Tip: Quiet location and I should imagine every room is fitted to the same high standard so leave it to Gw...

A fantastic service provided be equally fanyastic couple Gwen & Johan. Seldom will you come across such a commited husband & wife team with the single minded purpose of hospitality with a large dose of personal touch. Certainly anyone fortunate enough to stay at this extremely well managed establishment will be in for a treat seldom found in 5 star hotels.

Dear Friends

I am responding to the latest, very kind and generous review (because this is the way to do in on the system), but would like this to include all of our wonderful previous guests who have taken the time and effort to write such kind words about Aan Dorpstraat Guest House.

Naturally we are thrilled and very thankful to you all and are inspired to continue providing the best service we can to all our guests.

We hope that we shall meet again in the not-too-distant future!

Warmest regards

Johan and Gwen

we stayed at aan dorpstraat as part of our honeymoon and so were looking for something special. we certainly found it, so much so that we extended our stay with gwen and johan. the best places always reflect their owners and this was definitely the case here. generous, spotless, beautifully designed and very welcoming. gwen tirelessly looked after us, with everything from directions to recommendations. gwen and johan are clearly titans of the stellenbosch community, well known and all knowing to the extent that i would say if gwen doesn't recommend a place, don't go there. she knows the best of stellenbosch and she is more than happy to share it with you. (and she can arrange anything and everything for you - the best tables, wine tours, whatever it is you need)

johan takes care of the breakfasts, and his eggs (either scrambled or poached in our case) are gorgeous. he is very modest about his work but it takes care to produce scrambled eggs that good. (and he makes his own mini bread loaves every day. a spoonful of scrambled egg on a mini loaf is a thing of rare beauty.)

aan dorpstraat is spotless. we stayed in some 5 star places on our trip but nowhere was as clean as here. the attention to detail was really something.

if you are looking for a spotless, generous, happy, quiet and central place to stay in stellenbosch, look no further.

In our opinion, this is the place to stay in Stellenbosch. Very centrally located but still quiet. Our room was super clean and extremely comfortable with a king size bed, crisp cotton sheets, duvet and plenty of pillows. The bathroom was roomy with heated towel rail, thick towels, mixer taps, large shower, bath tub, loo and bidet. Added comforts in the bedroom were an air conditioner, ventilators, safe, dressing gowns, light dimmers, plasma tv, a nicely stocked mini bar & tea and coffee making facilities. Johan & Gwen are perfect hosts, we felt more like friends than guests. They have super insider tips so take their advice on everything from restaurants to wine tours! Breakfast was one of the best we had on our 2 week vacation in South Africa. A super fresh buffet with fruits, yoghurt, cereals, cheeses etc, fresh juices, tea and coffee. And don't turn down Johan's cooked breakfasts...made fresh to order in front of you and absolutely fantastic.
If we return to Stellenbosch, we'll stay no where else but Aan Dorpstraat.

I can only confirm what my father said in his review below. It was a perfect stay.
Gwen helped me to find and book a hairdresser who was great and very priceworthy.
As a student, you might have interest in where all the university people of Stellenbosch hang out. The three largest pub/cafés for student are at the other side of the town, though not that far, and theres a pub with a lot of students quite close (but not so close that it disturbes your good night's sleep =) .
The big shoppingmall is about 15 minutes walk from the guest house, don't miss the second floor!
