“Great stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2011

I can only confirm what my father said in his review below. It was a perfect stay.
Gwen helped me to find and book a hairdresser who was great and very priceworthy.
As a student, you might have interest in where all the university people of Stellenbosch hang out. The three largest pub/cafés for student are at the other side of the town, though not that far, and theres a pub with a lot of students quite close (but not so close that it disturbes your good night's sleep =) .
The big shoppingmall is about 15 minutes walk from the guest house, don't miss the second floor!

The hosts are, quite simply, amazing. From the moment we arrived they couldn't do enought to help us settle in and then help us with anything else we may need. They recommended 2 fantastic wineries they we visited late in the afternoon. When we arrived back we were invited to join them for drinks. In the morning our breakfast was fresh with everything you could ask for. What stood out for me though was during the night, Johan had noticed that I had stupidly left the window down on the drivers door. It had started raining and they were trying to work out how they could stop the rain coming in without having to wake us. In the end they had no option but to wake us. It is only because they cared enough to check the cars at night that they even noticed this in the first place. If you truly want to feel welcomed you shouldn't look any further.

We recently had a two night stay at the Aan Dorpstraat. This was our first experience of staying at a guest house and we had a lovely time. Gwen and Johan are superb hosts and made us feel very welcome. They told us a lot about the area and Gwen kindly booked restaurants for us both nights.

The guest house is ideally situated in Stellenbosch and it is a very short walk to the shops etc. Our room (on the ground floor) was quite small but very well appointed. We chose this room as it had two single beds and were more than happy with it. The room had a well stocked fridge, air conditioning and a ceiling fan, a good size safe and tea and coffee making facilities. We actually felt quite spoilt! The bathroom was very modern with a fantastic walk in shower, large bath and lovely "smellies". It even had a heated towel rail!!!!

Breakfast is made to order by Johan and there is a very wide choice of things to eat. His eggs, bacon and freshly made bread are delicious.

There is a small pool in the very pelasant courtyard and off-street parking. The entry system to the guest house and the rooms is a very good idea and did not for one minute make us think that the area was not safe. It is just a good way of making sure only guests can get into the house and your room ...which is what you want no matter where you are staying in the world.

What we liked most was the fact that Gwen and Johan were very easy to talk to and we found it very interesting finding out more about South Africa from their point of view. We spent one very nice evening sitting by the pool with a bottle of wine chatting with them for a couple of hours.

Overall we would highly recommend a stay at the Aan Dorpstraat and should we ever be lucky enough to return to Stellenbosch, we wouldn't stay anywhere else.

After eight days on tour, after a six hour drive, me, my wife and our grown up children, arrived at Johan and Gwens place Aan Dorpstraat in the afternoon. What a warm and lovely welcome we received. Gwen sat us down in some comfortable sofas and presented herself her husband and the Guest-house. The rooms were like clean, big hotel double room, with nice bathroom. Free Wi-fi, mini bar. Nice pool in the back, parking behind iron gates. Everything perfect. A very neat thing was that the rooms were key-less. You either entered a chosen code or your fingerprint to open your door! The place is only a few minutes walk from the city centre and in Stellenbosch it is also safe to walk in the evening. Gwen gave us some suggestions on where to eat and also valuable information on some wine-yards. In the morning we had full English breakfast, which Johan and Gwen prepared while we sat down. It felt like being a guest at someone's home and who did everything do make you feel comfortable. We stayed for three nights, doing the wine tasting thing. Me and my family have stayed at many places around the world, but the friendliness and warmth Gwen and Johan showed us, have we never met before. I can´t find any faults during our stay there, but lots of thing that were great.

Having stayed out of town before, I decided it would be nice to stay where you could walk into the town. You are only a 10 minute stroll into the town itself, with lots of nice distracting shops on the way!
Gwen and Johan are excellent hosts. Nothing is too much trouble. Gwen organised a taxi for us on evening to go to Rust en Vrede (a must by the way!), and then organised a oicnic for us during breakfast at a local winery. We stayed in the bedroom at the top of the stairs with a table and chairs outside. What a great room and a very comfortable bed. It had lots of storage space behind the beds, to hide your suitcase, a fridge with goodies in it (ice was readily available downstairs) and space to keep your wine chilled. The bathroom was amazing - great high powered shower, huge cubicle and a claw foot bath. Nice selection of toiletteries and plenty of them.
Breakfast was huge - good selection of fruit, cheese, yoghurt. Then cooked to order - try Johan's poached eggs.
Also a very nice, small pool, and Johan kindly turned ont he water jets for us.
If you don't want to eat out, there is a very good thai/chinese take away just around the corner and your hosts will gladly provide cutlery and plates.
Johan and Gwen are very passionate about their guest house and make you very welcome. The only slight put off for me was the biometric entry system. I always thought Stellenbosch was a very safe town, but this did make me rather wary.
But definitely stay here, if you want great service and position near to the town. Wifi access also very useful

Dear Lisa

Thank you so much for your very kind review. Your kind words mean a great deal to us especially, as you so rightly noted, since we are so passionate about our guest house..

For the benefit of future guests, however, I would like to comment on a few aspects if I may :

1. Location: We are very centrally located in Stellenbosch - in the heart of town - and not 10 minutes out of town. In fact, we are only about 2 minutes' safe walk from the closest, excellent restaurants, about 7-8 minutes' safe walk from the nearest shopping/business centre (that is in the very middle of town) and 5 minutes' walk to the nearest ATM, filing station, Info Bureau, etc.
2. Safety & security: The reason why we use electronic security is to simplify matters for our guests - so that guests do not have to carry keys and so that they know that their possessions are safe and NOT because we are located in a dangerous area. But we take security precautions to make guests feel secure and not to make them feel frightened. We chose an electronic system that is extremely easy to operate for the benefit of our guests. It is important for future visitors to South Africa to note that you would take the same safety precautions in SA as you would anywhere and that having great security does not mean that we consider our area to be dangerous for tourists.
3. Your beautiful photographs: The 3 really beautiful photographs placed by you are not of Aan Dorpstraat Guest House but of the beautiful wine estate, Warwick farm - that visitors to Stellenbosch would almost certainly love to visit. This farm is about 5 to 10 minutes' drive from our guest house.

Once again, thank you for your review. We really appreciate all the lovely comments you made about our guest house are so happy that you enjoyed your visit with us so much and hope that you will visit us again in the near future.

Warmest regards

Gwen

Gwen and Johann are extremely friendly and helpful hosts. Their enthusiasm for their roles is very evident. The location is ideal for enjoying the night life of Stellenbosch and as a base for wine tasting tours in the region during the day. The rooms are very clean, comfortable and tastefully furnished. The bathrooms have a definite wow-factor. Highly recommended.
