I went with my husband during our three week trip to South Africa and this was by far my favourite meal and we ate in some very good restaurants.

We had an extraordinary dining experience in the company of great friends who hosted us much to our embarrassment last month. The space itself is very comfortable, warm and elegant and our table was beautifully dressed and presented. We started off with a lovely bottle of Lahaye Champagne 2004 served in appropriate Riedel Sommelier glassware. We enjoyed this very much and were allowed plenty of time to savour it at our leisure with a selection of canapés. Each of the plates on our four course tasting menu that followed was perfect as could be, perfect in appearance, balance, creativity, combinations of taste & flavour. Service was just as perfect and unhurried from the highly professional staff.

The wine list, which is like a bible, is presided over by Joakim, possibly South Africa's top sommelier whom I know of old. After our champagne, we very much enjoyed a bottle of Donkiesbaai Steen (Chenin Blanc), rich and elegant with minerality and stone fruit flavours followed by Duncan Savage's own Savage Red, a very special multivarietal blend from multiple sites and a wonderful foil for our springbok main course. We felt we had to pass on the dessert wines - were we too sensible? Again, appropriate Riedel glassware from the Sommelier range throughout. They show the wines to their very best and should be used more often in top establishments offering good wines.

We had a wonderful evening with great friends as we shared possibly the best meal we have ever had in the Cape - and there is plenty of stiff competition for the title out there!

My husband and I went for dinner here and had the 6-course meal with the wine paring...it was well worth it!

Unfortunately we did not see much of the estate as we went in the evening just in time for our reservation but the drive up looked lovely and the restaurant itself was simple but very nice.

Generally when you have degustation menus the portions tend to be not much more than a bite or two which is fine as you are having so many meals. The courses here were quite generous which you can’t complain about but we were definitely extremely full after all 6 courses and the wine. The selection of wines were international, not only South African which was really nice as we had expected it to be more local.

I requested for a vegetarian option for the main course, as I do not eat Rabbit – I was served a potato risotto, which was amazing. The texture and flavor was very unusual.

The service was good and we had a really good experience overall. It was also very reasonably priced when converted to dollars, you would have paid twice as much for the same meal at a good restaurant in Sydney.

An exceptional meal requires more than just good food and at Rust & Vrede they have every angel covered. The service staff was friendly, competent and extremely knowledgeable.

They have a wine list that resembles a dictionary more than a menu, with multiple farms and varieties as well as various years to choose from. This could be a bit overwhelming were it not for the presence of a sommelier to help you navigate all the options.

The food was excellent. A frequent complaint of fine dining is that the portions are too small - and while we were not overwhelmed with the portion sizes it was more than enough to leave you pleasantly full.

If you are looking for a great evening and can spare the expense, it is an experience I can greatly recommend.

Everything was perfect. It surpassed every expectation ; it actually blew thru them.
Food is exquisite, setting is superb, service is attentive, unobtrusive and polite.
Attention to detail throughout the whole meal is unrivaled.
Sommelier is very knowledgeable, wine pairing is the way to go ; staff and customers are oddly strikingly beautiful.
A fairy tale night.
We were amazed and 2 months later still talk about it regularly. Cannot wait to go back.
PS: prices are about a third of NY prices, and quality 3 times as good. so.... 9 times as good! :)
