Beautiful older house in two parts. We stayed in the room called 'Elisabeth' which was large, with a huge bathroom & a small kitchenette. The bed was very comfortable & it was nice to have a small complimentary bottle of port in the room. Breakfasts are really good & all the staff very friendly & efficient. The owner Johan, takes a real interest in his guests & will sit down with you after breakfast with coffee, writing pad & felt tip pens & help tp plan your best options for the day together with the routes & timing. On our first night & my wife's birthday, he not only booked Umami's,a superb restaurant, but when we were running late, drove us there himself. He then amazed us after we had called for a taxi, by turning up again as it was raining, to drive us back. Now that is service! Stellenbosch is a lovely town & this guest house matches it in every way. At Johan's suggestion we visited the Vergelegen wine estate which is superb-don't miss it. Thanks to Bernice & Johan you made our stay with you very special.

After staying in guesthouses in and around Stellenbosch...the Calendon Villa is my choice when I travel to this area...the staff is friendly and responsive...almost like family. The grounds and building exterior have always been meticulously cared for ... the entry to the paved and covered parking area is narrow...but secure and safe. The owners, Johan and Ode, have maintained the aura of the historical home that they operate as a bed and breakfast. The rooms are quaint and many are furnished with family and acquired antiques. Several of the rooms are rather spacious and set up for self-catering. The interior of the house is spotless and we have enjoyed the warmth of a small fire in the common area with friends. The house is not sound proof, but I have never found the guests to be loud or inconsiderate. It is an easy walk to the downtown area of Stellenbosch -- a charming historical village with several great restaurants and wonderful shopping. Breakfast consists of selections of breads, fresh fruits, cheeses, and eggs prepared to order. I have found their rates to be comparative or lower than other B&B's in the area. If you are looking for a modern hotel...go elsewhere. But if you like a "home away from home" ....Johan and Ode have captured the essence of home.

I chose to stay here because of the hotel's location near the university but am sorry to say I would not return. Caledon Villa is well beyond its prime: the beds are uncomfortable, soundproofing is a major issue (one could hear all guests passing through the corridors at night) and the bathroom was really far below the standards you'd expect for the price you pay. A safe car park is available (watch that narrow entrance way though). Breakfast was poor compared to the other B&Bs we stayed at at the Cape.
At 1000 rand per night, this is definitely overpriced - one can find better deals in places that are more comfortable.

Firstly, this is a B&B so breakfast only plan on eating and drinking off property. Stellenbosch nightlife is a short walk away, about 10 minutes.

The property is pleasant and well located as you can walk. The rooms all vary. My room reflected the age of the guesthouse in that many ceilings were angled, including the already small bathroom, making the mirror hard to use and me bump my head. The double bed was small and I did not fit so well. Soundproofing was non-existent but most days only the chirping birds bothered my sleep. Beyond that the room was pretty clean, the internet (at a small fee) worked well, they had movie channels and CNN on the small TV as well as a full minibar. My room had no air conditioning. Breakfast was above average.

I would recommend this guesthouse to business visitors who will not linger in the room and tourists who can live with average comfort in exchange for walking to dinner. Staff were all pleasant and overall its ok.

Room Tip: Vraag na hoe groot het bed is, er zijn ook ruimere kamers.
