“Sunday evening coffee”
Reviewed April 21, 2014

The vibe at Java has always been nice. I remember the café from my student days, so I go there for a variety of reasons.
The service was slow and the cheesecake was poor, but the atmosphere was good and sitting outside with a coffee was a good end to the evening.

“Beyond disappointing experience!”
Reviewed April 10, 2014

Great location, however that's where it ends. We waited for 50 minutes for our breakfast without any feedback from our waitress as to the delay. A table that had sat down 20 minutes after us received their order within ten minutes of ordering their food. The cafe was probably at 40% occupancy. level Eventually when I managed to catch her attention and called her over she casually mentioned that the kitchen were having a problem with the hollandaise sauce for one order of eggs benedict ( but that everything else in the order for 3 people had been cooked and was now awaiting the new sauce). No apology, just this explanation. When the food arrived eventually, I couldn't believe my eyes. My plate was filthy ( what looked like congealed egg and tomato sauce) on the side of the plate, as well as dried scrambled eggs on the side of my niece's plate. The first thing that goes through ones mind is, how clean is the kitchen? Both my friend and i are in the hospitality industry; she is a chef by trade, who now manages a 12 bedroom boutique 4 star guesthouse and I own and manage a 4 star guesthouse. How can plates leave a kitchen looking like this? At least 2, maybe 3 staff have handled these plates en route from the kitchen to the diners table. If one opts for 2, you are looking at a chef and a waitress. Is this how little you think of your clientele, let alone the establishment that pays your wage????. I touched the bacon on my plate; it was like leather ( probably popped back into the microwave 40 minutes after being cooked, and the poached eggs were like rubber).I got up and found the Manageress who was extremely apologetic and insisted all 3 meals were on the house. We declined the food and sent it back to the kitchen; appetite's gone.... No garnish was available ( we requested a side of rocket and were happy to pay for it), and no ice was available either. I understand that at midday on a Monday morning restaurants are awaiting delivery, however no ice?? Pop out to the closest bottle store and replenish basics. How can you operate a bar with no ice on a hot day ( temperatures averaging 28) and expect patrons to be happy. In closing, both my friend and I promote Stellenbosch and it's wonderful restaurants to our clients daily. Unfortunately Java Cafe is definitely NOT on the list of recommended venues. Wake up people; you are located in the food capital of South Africa and in the hospitality business. Train your staff! Your tables and chairs are tacky, wipe them regularly. You have a fly problem too. Why?

“Great cafe, terrible service”
Reviewed March 25, 2014 via mobile

This is a great cafe in a fabulous position! There is a good atmosphere , nice food and drink and at good value. The whole establishment falls down on its service . The staff are not attentive, stand around by the door chatting and you wait for ages for anything to be done. Id only go there if you are happy with dismal service and you happen to have hours in your day to waste

“Nice lunch with a twist”
Reviewed March 23, 2014

Serve up nice food which has an individual style which makes it so much more enjoyable than the tired out usual boring stuff. Definitely recommend for simple snacks lunches and drinks.
The toilets could do with an upgrade to match the front of house standards.

“nice vibe”

Walking up to this restaurant we were impressed with all the people enjoying themselves and decided to join them. The service wa excellent and we enjoyed their salad selection. Try their food and enjoy all the people passing by - mainly tourists from Europe
