Its definately one of the in places at the moment particularly with students. This makes it good fun. Its great value for drinks, didn't eat here so can't comment on food. Great spot for people watching

Everytime we are in Stellenbosch we visit the Java cafe. Wonderful outdoor terrace in the center of town with view of the lively streets around. The waiters are all (student?) females. Wonder why they don't have any male servers outside. The food is basic but there is an extensive choice of sandwiches, salads, burgers and steaks. All very good and cheap too. The wines are the same. Very affordable and tasty. Its always a pleasure spending time at the Java, because there is always something to see and the staff is very friendly and relaxed. One strange thing is that you always have to wait pretty long before you get your first drink. They are fast with taking the order, but then it can take up to 15 minutes before your drink arrives. Acceptance seems to be the best attitude, because after a few drinks you forget. Lots of locals around there too and a very mixed crowd. Advisable for any time of day

The rule is no new reviews without new visits. That's easy with Java Cafe in Stellenbosch. During our February Cape Winelands Road Trip we made another obligatory visit to Java Cafe. Our history with Java goes back donkies years and we trust will continue into a long and indefinite future. The entire block is part of Java's story! The retirement condos across the street above Portjie's is part of the Java story! The sidewalk tables and Stellies public passing in review is part of the story. Yes, the coffee and the great lunches and the selection of dry whites are part of the story. The rest is history and that includes our next visit to Java Cafe. Experience the Java moment when you're strollin' or chillin' in Stellenbosch! You'll have your own stories to tell and Java will be at the center. My first book was conceived during a lunch at Java! We have to go there!!! You'll see why!

We ventured into this cafe a few nights ago for dinner and it was our worst dining experience since Nairobi. There must have been at least 15 girls working there, with only 3 looking like they were actually doing anything.

1. We sat inside as the outside area was full and asked to move out when something became available - the waitress indicated that she would let us know when seats became free, we sore at least 4 tables leave and our waitress did not offer to relocate us.

2. We ordered a thai green curry and beef stir-fry. A thai chicken salad came out with the stirfry and had to be sent back. The beef stirfry was terrible and tasted as though it had been made with a supermarket jar of stir fry sauce. Once the thai green curry finally came out (20 minutes later), it had peas in it and very little sauce. Ive never seen a pea in thailand let alone in their curries? We thought that maybe they thought that because the Pea's were green they should go in to make it look more green?

3. We then asked for the bill and both the thai green curry and the thai chicken salad were on the bill, which had to be redone.

4. Needless to say we were not going to leave a tip, so when we got our change and then was an extra 10 rand over what we should have received back, we laughed to ourselves and thought that it summed up the experience...

In saying the above, our waitress was lovely and very apologetic about everything - however just get it right the first time! Wouldnt recommend this place for anything other than staple salads, wraps and burgers.
