We pulled up to the gate of the Asara Winery on a Sunday afternoon, at 3 p.m. The gatekeeper reminded us that they would be closing in 15 minutes. According to all of the information we had on the property, closing time is 4 p.m. on Sundays, so we thought perhaps he was mistaken. When we walked in the door, the woman who gave us the information on tastings indicated they were about to close. I asked if we should leave, and she said, "No". We were feeling incredibly hurry with the tasting, when at 3:15 a nice woman came up to us and told us, "please don't feel rushed. We don't close until 4." That was kind of her, however, by this time, we felt so unwelcome and rushed. While purchasing the bottles of wine we chose, the same woman who said they were about to close seemed rather embarrassed she had lied about closing time. We left the premises at 3:40. They should not allowed guests in if they were just going to make them feel rushed. This is a beautiful winery and we would have liked to spend more time there.

We arrived in the dark after a long drive not really knowing a great deal about Asara. We had booked at short notice on the web after an early departure from another location. However, the site of the entrance lodge and the long drive passing through manicured rows of trees, roses and wines soon relaxed us. For such a large estate and hotel it contains relatively few guest rooms. The reason for this is the generous size of the rooms and en suite bathrooms, all of which have private balconies and are very comfortable and well equipped. The entire estate and hotel is immaculate and the staff welcoming and professional. The food is outstanding with the option of also drinking the estate's own wines although they do have the options of an extensive list of other wines.
The cellar tour and wine tasting should be on the list of things to do for all guests.
I was impressed by the quality of the hotel, food and wines and as a visitor from the overpriced UK, astounded by the outstanding value for money.

Friends recommended the view and tranquillity. They did complain that I was quite pricey, not really value for money, but we were willing to give it a try. However, as we went there to have lunch on Sunday, as we entered the Restaurant area the concierge gave us a foul look as if the cat dragged us in. Not professional at all, will not recommend friends. There are better places to dine and at a better prices as well.

After a night in Sutherland, the coldest place in South Africa (-6 overnight), stepping into Asara with its underfloor heating in our room was a real treat. The hotel is well appointed and the chandeliers, particularly the one in reception, are really beautiful. Our room had a fantastic view, large bed, bathrobes, and a bathroom you could hold a dance in. Really luxurious. The staff were falling over themselves to be helpful; nothing was too much trouble. We ate lunch at Sansibar's (great) and had dinner and breakfast the next day at Raphael's (great). My only complaint is that we were only able to stay one night!

I cannot say enough for this hotel. I stayed here for 4 days and thoroughly every moment there. The rooms are large, spacious, warm and impeccably clean. The bed is also nice and big. The ultra-modern bathroom is the size of some other hotel rooms. Really well laid out, plenty of storage space in the wardrobes and everything looked brand spanking new! House keeping and turn down services were all at convenient times and really did a great job. Room service was very prompt. There are nice facilities in the hotel and the in-room spa treatments were very nice. This place is perfect for a romantic week away with your partner. We had a nice sized balcony overlooking the lake and vineyard. Breath taking views and the buildings (deli, chocolatier`s, bar and restaurant) and the street between them was really well done in stone. The staff were very welcoming and were great at assisting us move appointments and bookings we had made prior to our arrival once we got there. There`s plenty to keep you busy in the hotel with wine tasting and horse back tours etc. From here you are also quite close to Franshoek which has tram wine tours etc and its a lovely little town with nice restaurants. I would stay here again ....but I would make it a longer visit.

Room Tip: I`d advise getting a room with a balcony overlooking the lake.

We stayed three nights at Asara and really enjoyed our stay. The staff were friendly and our room was spacious with a great bathroom and underfloor heating which really takes the winter chills away. The only thing I would recommend is to put a dressing table/desk in the room. As much as we hate working over holidays and using the hairdryer, sometimes it is necessary and the lack of a proper dressing table/desk area and insufficient plugs was problematic, moving tables and trying to reach down to plug equipment in. The restaurant was fabulous with great dinner, stunning breakfasts except for the last day, when the breakfast buffet was cancelled. The views are stunning and the service as really good.

Room Tip: We stayed in a Courtyard Room which was comfortable and quiet
