“Friendly staff but old building”
Reviewed March 6, 2013

The staff is always helpful and friendly. The breakfast is good. And the view is nice.
But don't make the same mistake we did : this is not a BOUTIQUE hotel. Everything is quite old, bedrooms are small (small beds too), the air conditioning system was not working when we came.
There is no wifi in the bedrooms...

Is this the worst hotel in the Cape ?...........it may just win the prize. It has just one thing going for it - the location ......high up overlooking the town of PaarL......that is , if you can cope with the gale force winds that blow the umbrellas off their stands and overturning the garden chairs.

But if its an expensive and old and very dirty room you are looking for...then this is your joint.

We booked for five nights ( through Trip Advisor ) we arrived to find a bathroom full of mould around the bath , a bare lightbulb in the wall for lighting and cracked and broken tiles, and a mirror hanging from a screw on the wall. The sitting room had a ceiling light that must have come from a hospital and old , mouldy car-boot sale furniture......and broken windows. Naturally, no fridge ( so we asked and were given a 20 year old horror).

We were informed by the very apologetic Manageress that the hotel had recently been bought by a gentleman who had bought it from the Bank / Liquidator, so no money had been spent on the hotel for, some time.....no matter he raised the room prices considerably ......and when confronting him he became unapologetic and belligerent.....

We left........my wife refused to take bath / shower in such disgusting conditions , preferring to shower at the golf club.

Don't touch this hotel with a ten for pole.........in the five years that we have been visiting the Cape, this is unquestionably the worst hotel we have experienced.

Be warned........be seriously warned.

To put it into context, we paid 500 Rand per night for a double room with shower and breakfast. We had a comfortable stay and would probably come back if we got the room for the same price.

The bad points:
-When we arrived we were greeted by the smell of cigarette smoke coming from the bar area.
-We wanted to use the swimming pool but it was quite dirty. There was an automatic cleaner but it couldn't seem to cope with all the debris from the trees and plants near by.
-The hotel lacked atmosphere, there was only 6 other guests during our stay.
-Our shower had a lot of loose and cracked tiles on the floor.
- No lifts.

The good points
- Nice comfortable bed.
- Clean cotton sheets and fluffy towels.
- Great value for money.
- Nice breakfast, lots of variety (and it was included in the price!)
- Fantastic views.

Overall it was a nice stay, we couldn't find it on our GPS. It used to be the Bergoff Hotel, and there are still road signs for this. You definitely need a car if you're going to stay here as it's a bit of a drive up hill from the Main Street of Paarl.

Room Tip: If you have lots of luggage avoid the top floor rooms as there is no lift!

It had one of the best views i have ever experianced at n hotel in a long time. There was this Swiiming pool over looking the entire Paarl aria. the Breakfast was exactly the way i asked for it, and the staff was very nice and friendly.

I will definitly recomend this to all my friends and have already done so.

Great location.

Room Tip: We staid right next to the Pool, perfect for me bacause it ment easy access.

Booked through your partner booking.com. Got a B&B for R300 per night for two people, excellent value. The room was nice & cosy. Lovely view over the Boland town of Paarl as the hotel sits high up the mountain slope. Breakfast was OK, fruit not fresh. Front desk service was good. Would go back there. Modern design and decor.
