“Charming B & B”
Reviewed April 24, 2012

My wife and I spent three nights at de Leeuwenhof at the end of March 2012 in a luxury room at the barnyard.

De Leeuwenhof is quietly located a little outside of Paarl on a fruit and wine farm. Nevertheless Paarl is within a short and easy drive.

At arrival we were greeted by Yvonne and supplied with recommendations where to go for dinner.

Our room was rustic in a sophisticated country house style and the grounds were well kept. Each morning I saw a gardener at work. One morning Daan tasked the gardener to wash our car, which we found very attentive. Our room had a big separate bathroom with two sinks, rain shower and additional regular hand shower; water pression was good.

Breakfast was rich and of good quality with juice, cereals, freshly made fruit salad, fried eggs, bacon and mushrooms. There were two friendly ladies who arranged the breakfast and did the service.

Daan is an interesting and pleasant person to talk to and to me seemed to be an expert in agriculture and wine. One day we talked about South African Shiraz which ended up that Daan gave me a bottle of Shiraz from his own production and invited us for an after dinner drink. Unfortunately I could not accept the bottle as we were returning home the next day and it was not possible to take the bottle on the plane. To my greatest regret we also did not have the after dinner drink with Yvonne & Daan as we were completely exhausted from our tour to various winegrowing-estates.

At check-out within 20 minutes Daan gave us a lesson on the political and economic conditions, under which he has to run his business.

To make a long story short, I would go back in a heartbeat. If I had to criticize minor details it is the length of the bed (is it 1,90 m?), which I found a little short for my size (1,80 m) and that there was a little too much light in our room during the night due to the lights on the grounds; however, I understand that this improves security for the guests. I am not a good sleeper, if it is not completely dark in the room, but other people might be less sensitive.

We loved the two nights we spent at De Leeuwenhof. Thanks to well appointed rooms with underfloor heating and snug duvets we slept like babies. After spending our days visiting the surrounding wine estates it was comforting to know that we could choose to relax with a glass of wine in the comfortable lounge area or sit at the pool around a bonfire. Daan and Yvonne made us feel at home - thanks a lot, from Gary and Debbie Orwin

Daan and Yvonne have a elegant and comfortable boutique hotel on their beautiful wine estate near Paarl. They are wonderful hosts and are always available for referrals to restaurants or interesting sites. As well, we enjoyed several nice conversations with them both, and since we're considering a move to SA, Daan was very helpful. We're hoping for a longer visit next time. The rooms are large and comfortable with a patio, kitchenette, lots of closet space and very nice bathroom. The pool, patio and breakfast area are well planned with a view of the mountains. Memmie and her daughter served homemade pastries every morning along with fresh fruit, cold cuts, and hot breakfast if desired. We are SO ready to come back.

Room Tip: Need a car.

De Leeuwenhof is a boutique wine estate with excellent, stylish accomodation. All rooms have air con, roomy showers, twin wash basins and comfy beds. It is very easy to find just off exit 62A on the main N1 road. The owners are very friendly and helpful and Paarl is a great place to stay to visit the winelands. Stellenbosch and Franschoek are a short drive away and Paarl is relatively undiscovered. The main street is very attractive and we would recommend a visit to the museum, and Afrikaans Monument which has panoramic views of the area, to get there take the R45 towards Franschoek and follow the signs after a few hundred yards.
Another recommendation would be to visit Laborie Wine Estate, this has probably the best view in the winelands and is an outstanding restaurant. It is just off the main street in Paarl, again the R45 turnoff but towards Paarl.
The farmhouse at De Leeuwenhof is totally secure with gated parking and a beautiful swimming pool and breakfast by the pool. There is a laptop for use by guests which is handy for searching destinations and confirming flights!
Highly recommended!

Small hotel on outskirts of Paarl with five rooms and two apartments. Old farmhouse set in a fruit and wine farm, with 2 nice swimming pools and lovely grounds - BBQ (brai) facilities if you wish. Lounge/bar area by pool, with honesty bar.

We had a duplex apartment, for two of us, so we only used ground floor. Room did not entirely suit us, but that's just a matter of personal taste.  More importantly, the patio and veranda were brilliant, looking over garden and pool to mountains, with comfy seating. Once we nested, we were very comfortable.

Breakfast was served on terrace of common lounge/bar area. Nice food, freshly cooked. Owners knowledgable and helpful for visits and reservations.  Keen to make sure guests were happy.

We chose to start our three week trip to SA with a three night stay at De Leeuwenhof. Dan and Yvonne are lovely hosts and made us feel very welcome. My boys (15 and 12) loved the place, particuarly the swimming pool. A great location from which to tour the winelands with great restaurants locally situated. We will look back fondly at our stay in South Africa with De Leeuwenhof being a highlight. Thank you Dan and Yvonne! Kevin and Belinda Irlam-Mowbray and boys

Yvonne, Daan and family are incredible hosts!

The guestrooms are tastefully furnished, the beds are fantastic to sleep on and you already feel at home shortly after you have arrived. It's an enchanting place that relaxes you and makes you easy going. Spending new years' eve at De Leeuwenhof Guesthouse was an incredible experience - sitting at the fireplace, watching the stars and enjoying a typical Braai-BBQ with Yvonne and Daan was simply the BEST!

We will come back!
