We had a most enjoyable time at Rolbaken.

The accommodation is in a charming cottage that consists of three en-suite rooms, a shared kitchen, dining room and living room. The cottage is well equipped to self-cater although we opted to be pampered and booked the room with dinner. We were lucky enough to share a dinner with Mary, Dick and their extended family. Everything was delicious. The room was very clean and spacious with a wonderful view onto the rolling hills.

We very much enjoyed all the hiking trails and hearing aboput all the projects that Mary and Dick are busy with. Thanks for a memorable stay!

A warm welcome, clean and neat accommodation with added touches and delicious home cooked food are just three of the wonderful things that made our stay at Rolbaken so special. Both Mary and Dick went out of their way to ensure our stay was a memorable one. Their farm is beautiful and the history and knowledge they can share with you is immense. We enjoyed breakfast each morning on the farm stoep (South African word for verandah or patio) and there was a constant supply of yummy homemade rusks and coffee to help ourselves to. Just sad we never made it up to the Dam for a swim but there is always a 'next time.' We left with fresh farm eggs and strawberries as well as homemade cordial as reminders of our lovely time there. Perfect for everyone from Honeymooners to Families! Try out this Karoo Gem you won't be disappointed! And if you dont want to leave the comfort of the farm and guesthouse - DONT - there is more than enough to do here - our very active two year old son was enthralled by the tractors, sheep, dogs, ostriches, fresh air and lovely open spaces!

What a great start to our honeymoon! We were greeted by warm-hearted people as if we were family. We were spoiled with a lovely room, champagne and a very special gift. Mary told us all about the history of Rolbaken and invited us for a stroll to the dam to watch the sunset. Dick told us all about their future plans for the farm while we were enjoying a well balanced homemade breakfast. We were sad to leave such a marvelous farm and new found friends. We will be sure to visit again when going to the Klein-Karoo.

Everything at this place is delightful.

When driving up an, what seemed like endless, gravel road and not seeing a sole, we arrived at Rolbaken - it is exactly as the photos show, it is set in beautiful landscape, you get the whole house to lounge about in and if you allow them (which I strongly recommend) the owners Dick and Mary and their 3 dogs join you for meals which is a most enjoyable and interesting experience. Mary's cooking is exceptional and if you are not fussy just ask for the specialities... we ate like kings and Queens!

In our haste we had only booked one night but once there would have appreciated staying longer.

Thank you Mary and Dick.... May your farm continue to thrive x

The Pretorius and Coetzee families of Port Elizabeth travelled to the area to run the Meiringspoort Half Marathon. My wife, Adri, has an amazing ability to find interesting places for holidays and short breaks and this was no exception. Dick and Mary are interesting and very generous hosts. The house is perfect for more than one couple and children and the farm is great for experiencing farm activity and healthy outdoor leisure. Our Sunday walk and picnic was really special; we walked up the hill behind the main house and swam in the one dam, had something to eat and then walked along the ridge to the other dam. What a thrill! and what amazing views. One should certainly stay for longer than 2 days.

We arrived at Rolbaken in the dark and cold, but were soon revitalised by the warm welcome by Dick and Mary. Mary had made a pan of soup just in case we were hungry, and offered us a warm welcome. We had the house all to ourselves, after spening an hour chatting to our hosts. What fascinating people they are and we only wished we could have stayed longer. The following morning Mary made my teenage boys day when she bought " still hot from the oven" muffins, which they devoured with gusto!
We wish you well with your vision for the farm, and will stay next time we vist SA.

We decided on a whim to stay for a night at Rolbaken to break up our drive from Plettenberg Bay to Oudtshoorn, and it turned out to be one of the the highlights of our three week trip to South Africa. Completely off the beaten track, in fact the journey to get there over the dirt tracks was quite an experience in it's own right, especially as we had chosen the cheapest possible rental car, but the suspension held out no problem, so don't let the prospect of off-road dirt-track driving put you off (one tip though: definitely follow Dick's instructions to zero your milometer, and then follow his instructions exactly - just keep an eye out for road-crossing tortoises).

The drive was more than worth it, as we had a fantastic night and day being looked after by Dick and Mary - a wonderful couple. The dinner they made us was superb, and the breakfast the following day was awesome. The property we stayed in was spotless and a pleasure to stay in - there are 3 rooms in it, and we were the only guests.

The place is very isolated, but is absolutely spectacular and beautiful. Mary drove us round some of their farm to take their three lovely dogs out for a swim, and told us all about their efforts to turn round the almost derelict farm they bought a few years back into a thriving ecosystem one field at a time, using some "new-fangled" approaches that apparently startled their more traditional neighbours like actually sharing water supplies, and using donkeys to deter predators from their flocks rather than simply adopting a shoot-to-kill policy and blasting them to pieces. Dick's previous experience as a biologist was very intereresting to hear about especially in terms of how they are revitalizing their land, while promoting the local fauna too, and I wish him and Mary all the best as they try to bring their farming neighbours into the 20th century, nevermind the 21st! It had been really dry for ages when we were there, so I hope the drought has finally broken, and the farm is now flourishing under their enthusiastic care.

Family's (with kids that aren't TV-addicted...) and couples will love this isolated but delightful farm-stay with a lovely and fascinating couple. Hikers/trekkers and so on would also find awesome walking amongst the spectacular and picturesque area. We wished we'd had time to stay longer! Highly, highly recommended.
