We stayed at Rolbaken recently to break the journal from Cape Town to Addo National Park (and to visit the nearby Cango Caves). What a wonderful spot. Mary and Dick were wonderful hosts - showing our children around the farm, cooking a fantastic meal, and dinning with us as well. They went out of their way to deal with our dietary idiosyncrasies. We chose Rolbaken because the reviews were so good - and they were all correct. I really can't recommend this enough.

Room Tip: Others may have mentioned there is quite a long drive on a dirt road to get there - but it really is...

Rolbaken Country Guesthouse is absolutelly perfect. Hosts, Mary and Dick, really go out of their way to make their guest feel welcome and completelly at home - and this is "home away from home".
There is always something totally special when food is served for breakfast and dinner. The fact that both Mary and Dick join their guests for breakfast and dinner makes the experience very special.
Could not dream of going anywhere else next time we go to Outdshoorn.

The first 3 nights of our family holiday saw us roaring into Rolbaken. We had a wonderful time from the first. The cottage has a lovely spirit and is fittingly furnished with oldy world furniture. We look the master room in the main house, with our toddler conveniently located in a twin across the lounge. Granny and Big Dave were just 'outside' but in a location that afforded them some privacy.

We spent our days admiring the very pretty hens and their demanding cockerels, collecting eggs, walking the sheep and donkeys from their day time pastures, rambles on the farm to the dam, birdwatching and chilling.

Mary and Dick are great cooks and we opted for the full dinner, bed and breakfast. These energetic two showed up for meals and whipped up a divine storm of home baked breads, mueseli and much much more. Mary makes almost everything from scratch so even the peanut butter was great. My wee one still asks for Dragon Juice (home made granadilla/passion fruit cordile). Big Dave is still over the moon at his impromtu flat bread lesson from a real indian woman's recipe and I am still clucking over the poached eggs on freshly picked mushrooms.

This time Rolbaken hosted us during the KKNK Festival. During our six day stay we had busy time, shared between the Nature Reserve and the Farm (on one hand) and the Festival Activities in Oudtshoorn (on the other). We also visited Prince Albert via the picturesque Swartberg Pass and an olive farm. After each day filled with exhibitions, shows, tours etc. we enjoyed Mary's delicious meals (fresh farm produce!) and our hosts' incredibly warm hospitality. The perfect accommodation, combined with Nature, Art and Laughter with friends – all ingredients for a fantastic holiday!

Anyone visiting Rolbaken will not be disappointed! We loved our 3 nights there and could have stayed a lot longer. There is so much to do and see and our kids enjoyed learning about animals and nature, collecting eggs, feeding the chickens and walking to the dam with the farm dogs.

Our hosts, Mary and Dick were simply wonderful people, true gems that come into our lives so rarely. Mary's cooking is amazing and I loved the fact that we all sat around a table and talked as though we were family, and Dick's knowledge of stars, nature and the area kept us entertained for hours. We were made to feel welcome and part of their lives from the minute we arrived.

It was with a tear in my eye that we parted, but I do hope we can visit again someday for another magical experience of the Klein Karoo!

My family and I enjoyed staying here for three days in December. We were looking for a place we could comfortably stay in and Rolbaken Guest House more than sufficed! The property itself was spacious and beautifully decorated, with comfortable furniture throughout as the beds were great quality and the sofas and chairs implored you to use them.

In addition, Mary and Dick's hospitality was simply superb. There were so many examples of their kindness but one jumps out. After the wonderful walk to see the cave paintings, one of my shoes was worse for wear, with the sole detached from the rest of the shoe, so Dick kindly brought back a host of his own tools and materials to fix this shoe, which was accomplished. The willingness to help contributed to an amazing stay at Rolbaken. In addition, Mary's cooking simply cannot be missed. For anyone who stays here, I cannot emphasise enough that you should take advantage of the food on offer, as it is delicious!! The ostrich salad for a starter, the roast chicken for the main, and a chocolate pudding with ice cream as a dessert were just some of the highlights!

If you are looking for some wonderful company and a stunning guest house to stay in around the Outdshoorn area, then please look no further, as I'm confident that Mary and Dick would welcome you with open arms at the sublime Rolbaken Guest House!

We so enjoyed Mary and Dick's hospitality. Really felt like being at home from home with easy access to the facilities including complimentary tea/coffee and rusks. Dinner and breakfast were very tasty indeed! Highly recommended as a break in the quiet Klein Karoo!
