“Rolbaken and the KKNK Festival”
Reviewed April 23, 2013

This time Rolbaken hosted us during the KKNK Festival. During our six day stay we had busy time, shared between the Nature Reserve and the Farm (on one hand) and the Festival Activities in Oudtshoorn (on the other). We also visited Prince Albert via the picturesque Swartberg Pass and an olive farm. After each day filled with exhibitions, shows, tours etc. we enjoyed Mary's delicious meals (fresh farm produce!) and our hosts' incredibly warm hospitality. The perfect accommodation, combined with Nature, Art and Laughter with friends – all ingredients for a fantastic holiday!

Anyone visiting Rolbaken will not be disappointed! We loved our 3 nights there and could have stayed a lot longer. There is so much to do and see and our kids enjoyed learning about animals and nature, collecting eggs, feeding the chickens and walking to the dam with the farm dogs.

Our hosts, Mary and Dick were simply wonderful people, true gems that come into our lives so rarely. Mary's cooking is amazing and I loved the fact that we all sat around a table and talked as though we were family, and Dick's knowledge of stars, nature and the area kept us entertained for hours. We were made to feel welcome and part of their lives from the minute we arrived.

It was with a tear in my eye that we parted, but I do hope we can visit again someday for another magical experience of the Klein Karoo!

My family and I enjoyed staying here for three days in December. We were looking for a place we could comfortably stay in and Rolbaken Guest House more than sufficed! The property itself was spacious and beautifully decorated, with comfortable furniture throughout as the beds were great quality and the sofas and chairs implored you to use them.

In addition, Mary and Dick's hospitality was simply superb. There were so many examples of their kindness but one jumps out. After the wonderful walk to see the cave paintings, one of my shoes was worse for wear, with the sole detached from the rest of the shoe, so Dick kindly brought back a host of his own tools and materials to fix this shoe, which was accomplished. The willingness to help contributed to an amazing stay at Rolbaken. In addition, Mary's cooking simply cannot be missed. For anyone who stays here, I cannot emphasise enough that you should take advantage of the food on offer, as it is delicious!! The ostrich salad for a starter, the roast chicken for the main, and a chocolate pudding with ice cream as a dessert were just some of the highlights!

If you are looking for some wonderful company and a stunning guest house to stay in around the Outdshoorn area, then please look no further, as I'm confident that Mary and Dick would welcome you with open arms at the sublime Rolbaken Guest House!

We so enjoyed Mary and Dick's hospitality. Really felt like being at home from home with easy access to the facilities including complimentary tea/coffee and rusks. Dinner and breakfast were very tasty indeed! Highly recommended as a break in the quiet Klein Karoo!

We spent two nights in Rolbaken just before New Year and had a wonderful stay - the accommodation is spotless and beautifully appointed and Dick and Mary Carr are gracious and accomplished hosts with a wealth of knowledge and experience of nature and the outdoors to share with their visitors. We had wonderful food and had the opportunity of being involved in farm activities like gathering eggs from chickens, which was very special for our three year-old. All in all a wonderful stay and a great base to explore the outlying area's - we went to visit De Rust and Prince Albert as well as traveling the Swartberg Pass, which is an amazing experience.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good sizes and well appointed with en suite bathrooms

What an experience we had at Rolbaken when we stayed there for 2 nights. It was part of our honeymoontrip through South Africa and the Karoo Farm of Dick and Mary was recommended by our friends Rob & Terry from Benoni. The breakfast and dinner prepared by Mary was delicious and they joined us both every meal. They tell you very interesting stories and it happened all as we were family of them. The location of this farm is just what we needed: pure nature, silence,no stress,a beautifull and clean guesthouse and the perfect hosts. They adviced us to visit the Ostrich Farm 'Safari' nearby and Dick recommended us to do Swartbergpas. One must you have to do,is to take a look in the foto album you'll find in the guesthouse. It tells you how Dick and Mary converted an old school farm into a beautifull guesthouse. As Mary told us we were the first Belgian visitors @ Rolbaken , there's only one thing left to say...it was our first but surely not our last time we visit Rolbaken.Peter,Lydia & Kevin

This is home away from home on a farm that has been lovingly restored to it's original state. Dick and Mary are the perfect hosts - one is made to feel so welcome from the moment you arrive. The house is spacious, beautifully furnished and every need catered for. Do yourself a favour and treat yourself to Mary's cooking - it is delicious and worth every cent. In fact, get Dick and Mary to join you for dinner - they have a wealth of knowledge on the wildlife, environment and conservation in this area. We only stayed overnight on our first visit but within an hour of arriving had already discussed our return and made tentative arrangements to do so. Rolbaken is a gem in more ways than one.
