“An oasis in the Klein Karoo”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

We were doing a motorcycle trip through the eastern and northern Cape during December 2012. We were booked to stay at Zwartberg View Mountain lodge, but found the owner had issues with bikers and was less than welcoming. We moved on and found Thabile Lodge and after a day of riding in 40 degree heat it was like finding an oasis. The pool is pristine and was the first facility we used. The rooms were the next port of call. They are spacious and air conditioned, and mine had a huge shower. The owner, Len, is a great host and genuinely loves people. The food is out of this world, and is served on the veranda of the lodge, which is set in a beautiful garden with great views of the hills close by. The area is motorbike heaven so we will be back and Thabile will definitely be our base again.

Room Tip: The rooms are actually chalets with each chalet having two rooms. The chalets are spaced well apart.

Thanks so much Len for such an amazing stay! In spite of the soaring temperatures, our room was lovely and cool and the pool was a real winner. We found your food absolutely delicious with our steaks done to perfection. We especially enjoyed the company of your other guests and friends. Thanks for introducing us to the chilli Grappa! Hi to Garfield!! Jen and Phil

This was our fourth visit and it won't be our last.. We always have a wonderful time made possible by the lovely host Len and great staff( really more friends than staff). Len provides a high standard of accommodation and excellent food. The location is perfect for Karoo days out but great to get back for a quick dip in the pool before a glass of wine on our little balcony watching the sunset bring alive the reds of the Swartberge mountains. We have travelled many thousand kilometres around South Africa over the years but Lens lodge still tops our favourite stop.( Oh...and he is very very motorbike friendly)

Room Tip: They are all equally good but ask for extra privacy and your lodge will not be overlooking anyone.

Len is a most amusing and friendly guy and the verandah is a perfect setting for a sundowner and an excellent dinner. The rooms are very attractive and the bathrooms too. Fantastic shower in particular. The view over the Zwartberg Hills is outstanding. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place for a get-away-from-it-all moment or a stopping off point.

Room Tip: We had 1 and 2 which were perfect and nearest the house!

Len was a fantastic host along with the many animals and entertaining like minded guests, we had a great time at Thabile Lodge. The rooms are spacious, uncluttered yet comfortable, the food is fantastic, there is no need to book a restaurant as it cannot be beaten in town. Len is very informative and has great advice for visiting the area. I would definitely not cut your stay short, you need at least 2 nights to relax and take in the Klein karoo beauty!
Highly recommend a visit!

We spent a very entertaining night at Thabile, where we were greeted by Len, who would prove to be a most encompassing and entertaining host!

The main house with the patio, bar and pool facilities is beautiful. Whether you want to chill with a drink or in the pool, the mountains provided a very grand backdrop. After we had a swim and a jacuzzi, we went to the room to shower and change for dinner.

The rooms are charming, lots of space, nice rustic design, huge bath and lots of water pressure. And, best of all, a big air conditioning unit that will keep you frosty even in the heat! There were a few ants around outside when we stayed, but you are provided with a large can of Doom which I spent a few minutes enjoying myself creating a barrier by the door to stop them roaming in.

Dinner was fantastic, being a veggie I was amply provided for, and the entire evening Len kept the good vibe and conversation among the guests going as he served us. We stayed up late star gazing and talking over drinks.

Breakfast was well laid out and we had cooked items to order. I can only recommend Thabile for a very warm and homely stay, where you're made to feel part of a family, even if only for an evening.

Oh, and you're going to love the cat!

Room Tip: Len told us he has a couple of rooms with big baths, if you fancy a soak make sure to ask for one of...

After a nasty experience with a lodge close by (ZWARTBERG VIEW run by Mr Jann Bader - PLEASE see my review of his establishment on tripadvisor) , we were forced to find alternative accommodation at short notice. Fortunately Len was able to accommodate us, and wow, what a great experience. He is the comsumate host and tended to our every need, from serving us drinks, to five star food that would not be out of place in a very upmarket restaurant. The swimming pool was sublime, and also had a small gym and jacuzzi to boot. There is also a great little bar and open air veranda where you can enjoy sundowners watching the sun set behind the beautiful mountains. Our chalets were charming, with air-conditioning (a MUST, especially in December, as Temps can approach 40 degrees! ), and a wonderful shower straight from heaven. The rates are reasonable and you get every penny's worth and then some. Thank you Len for a memorable experience - we will certainly be back....often!
