“Unexpected gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2013

My daughter and I stayed for 1 night in Klipheuwel Country House, some 7 kilometers outside Oudtshoorn on the road to Volmoed of the R328. They are neighbours of the better known 'De Zeekoe Guest House'.
To my opinion this guest house is underestimated. Klipheuwel's rooms are spacious, with an extremely spacious bathroom. Everything is spic&span. The rooms are tastefully furnitured in ‘Country & Garden’ style. De rooms are situated next to porch, which in turn is situated next to the swimming pool. In a few meters you are from your room in the swimming pool. Breakfast is served on the porch in front of your room, unless (as we had) it is raining. In that case breakfast is served in the family living room. Breakfast is abundant.
Klipheuwel is part of an ostrich breeding farm. Guided tours can be asked for. Disadvantages of the guest house: there is no WiFi (yet). And there are a lot flies. The host herself thinks this is a nuisance, but they haven't found a solution yet. Still, this my reason to rate cleanliness with 3 stars instead of 5. For the rest, highly recommended. I'll certainly return.

Gosh.. I cant stop talking about this place!
Elmarie and her housekeeper make this guesthouse a real gem. My partner and I stayed for just 1 night ( such a pitty ) on route to Cape Town from Plett.
High quality on every level and exactly what I love about Afrikaans hospitality.
The breakfast served on the poolside patio was simply devine.. Still dreaming of those sweet, hot, slightly crunchy vet koek while overlooking the Karoo valley.
Bliss...

My three children and I were made to feel so welcome. Everyone went out of their way to ensure that we were comfortable and happy! The rooms are beautifully decorated, the breakfast is so delicious and the service is perfect. A real treat not to be missed!

This is the place to stay. The hospitality, excellent and beautiful rooms, the outside area, the views, the KING size bed was fantastic. Wish we could have stayed longer!

My Wife and I discovered this accommodation in the tourist office of Oudtshoorn, after requesting somewhere that was quiet and peaceful. Having spent 31/2 weeks in SA this was by far the best place we stayed.
The Klipheuwel Country House is a 10 minute drive outside Oudtshoorn situated on an Ostrich farm. It has 3 guest rooms attached to the main house.
The large rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished with en-suite bathrooms with roll- top baths. The beds are very comfortable and we probably had the best nights sleep during our stay in SA. It was nice not having to listen to any traffic or other noise, it was so quiet and peaceful.
The views from the patio outside the rooms are superb. Unfortunately, the weather during our stay was not very good, it rained and was very cloudy, so we did not get to fully appriciate the views
The hosts Laubscher & Elmarie are what makes Klipheuwel so special, they were very welcoming and attentive to our needs. Elmarie serves a very good breakfast, beautifully presented.
Nothing was to much trouble for our hosts, they even went to the trouble of booking restaurants for us.

What a little gem, there were four of us and we stayed for 2 nights, we would love to have stayed for another 2 nights but we had other reservations made in Cape Town. The house is perfectly situated in a quiet area with wonderful views. You can feel any stress disappear as the rooms are spacious, seperate from the main house and there are only 3 making it very intimate. The breakfast was vast and the best we had in SA, all freshly made and just about everything you would possibly eat for breakfast to choose from, a real delight. The hosts even made a fire for us outside by the pool for us to come home to and have drinks before retiring......bliss !

This is THE place to stay in Oudtshoorn, and a highlight of our stay in South Africa. It is the quintessential luxury boutique property. The 3 rooms are individually designed with great care, by the owner Elmarie, complete with bespoke furnishings and quality bath products.
The rooms all face the large pool and there is a lovely gazebo area, which is a great place to relax, in front of a blazing open fire with pre-dinner drinks, before heading into one of Oudtshoorn’s many excellent restaurants. Our favourite was Kalinka (much classier than the Jemima experience). Their trio of steak - springbok, kudu, and ostrich - was fabulous and cooked to perfection.
The breakfasts at Klipheuwel were fantastic, sublime, made to order, 2 course affairs and were easily the tastiest breakfasts of our holiday. They are served on the wooden decking next to the pool, just outside your room.
A great way to spend a day is to drive to Prince Albert via the Swartberg pass and have a leisurely lunch at Koggelmander Restaurant (Half way along the main street in Prince Albert on the left). They have superb crepes, but I ordered the open sandwich of fried banana, gherkins, feta and mushrooms, which shouldn’t work but was marvellous! Then drive back via the Meiringspoort Pass with a stop for a swim in the waterfall pools.
The secret ingredient of this property is the most welcoming family. They constantly went out of their way to help us and make our stay as perfect and relaxing as possible.
If you are planning to stay in Oudtshoorn and you are looking for an up-market exclusive, intimate hideaway that is very reasonably priced and truly relaxing, then do not hesitate, book this place now!
