De Zeekoe Guest Farm
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 28, 2009

Stayed for 2 nights at De Zeekoe in one of their lakeside cabins. It's a few minutes drive from the main building, but it's a beautiful setting on the lake and it had 2 bedrooms, so great for us as a family of four. The cabin itself was quite rustic compared to some of our other accomodation, but very clean and comfortable. The staff were great and dinner and breakfast were a real pleasure. I thought the dinner was a little over-priced - very nice, but we had eaten in equally good places for less.
There were plenty of activities on offer, but we just took the farm tour. It was very good - the children liked being taken around on a tractor and it was more intimate than the larger ostrich farm tours. Having said that, we did also go to Safari Ostrich Farm which is just over the road from De Zeekoe and we really enjoyed that - we were lucky that there were only a handful of people there at the same time. We didn't visit the meerkats, but DeZeekoe offer a significant discount compared to booking direct with the meerkat man, so worth going through them.
Overall, I really enjoyed De Zeekoe and I would recommend it as a base for exploring Oudtshoorn.

We stayed at De Zeekoe Guest Farm for one night during our visit to South Africa. The farm itself is beautifully situated outside Oudtshoorn with stunning views everywhere you look - especially in the evening when the sun is setting. The room we stayed in was a good size and had everything you would need but did smell of smoke because of the fireplace which was slightly offputting. In itself the hotel is luxurious but does lack soul. All the elements are in place to make De Zeekoe a great hotel however a lack of charm means I didn't feel this was as good value for money as the other wonderful guest houses we stayed in during our trip.

We spent one night in one of the rustic cabins by the lake close to the lodge. We had a lovely evening, first enjoying the early evening on the balcony and then with a big fire in the fireplace. I woke up early to enjoy the peace and serenity of the balcony over the lake. Breakfast at the lodge was excellent. I warmly recommend this place to everyone I hear heading in that direction.
The only, only thing I could say is that once you have reached the cabins, you feel you are far from the rest of the world but in fact, the main road passes just across the lake and passing cars can be heard from the cabins. But, yes, I would return and next time, would spend 2 or 3 nights.

Stayed in the cabins for 2 nights. Was pleasantly surprised by accomodation and location. Cabins were neat and had almost all the amenities we needed. The ostrich farm was a treat - we were able to cycle down to the main house for breakfast.
Breakfast was very well presented and staff were very accomodating and friendly.
On the downside, there was no soap holder in the shower which was extremely awkward, and the airconditioner did not appear to be in full working order.
But, even with these small hiccups, we will definitely still return.

Many enthusiastic reviews on this site that are more than deserved, we agree with everything said. From the bird paradise to the wonderful sky, the delicious ostrich meals and the great breakfast, the wooden balcony over the lake and the nice pool at the main building.
Still the number one quality of the place is the exceptional level of the hospitality and friendliness of the management and staff.
We definitely had a wonderful 3-day stay at one of the log cabins and would recommend anyone interested by this kind of accommodation to stay there.

PS: You should really try to go and see the meerkats! You will have a truly magic experience with Grant, a most competent and entertaining biologist, and his little friends.

We stayed here for 2 nights on our route through the garden route. The guest house is lovely, great setting, with excellent staff, very friendly and welcoming. Do not miss out on the Congo Caves nearby for an exciting caving experience!
