“An incredible stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2007

We had the most amazing two night stay at this lodge, watched hippo while sat in bed with our morning coffee, and saw springbok, wildebeest and rhino in the evening from our patio while the sun was setting.

Service was personal and friendly while being very professional, the food was lovely. We felt so welcome and spoiled and we are looking forward to returning one day. Far exceeded our expectations - and I would highly recommend the superior tents.

We spent 3 nights at the Buffelsdrift Game lodge and had a great time. The elephant walk is amazing and you don't need kids to enjoy it. We took 3 elephants for an hour's alk and got to feed them too. In adition, the bush safari drives were every good, the guides were very knowledgable and gave a lot of detail on more than just the animals ie plants etc. Food was ok but the setting of the bar and restaurant was beautiful. the tents are very luxurious and quiet except for the noise of the hippos but that is a nice noise and not too bad at all.

This place is beautiful and the service is top notch. I would recommend booking a superior tent. They are only a few feet away from the large watering hole, where a family of hippos live. The other tents are farther up the hill, not as private, and have lower quality furnishings. In the superior tents, you can watch the wildlife from one of two private porches, your comfortable bed, or even from the bathtub in the luxurious en suite bathroom. We saw the hippos, rhinos, several species of antelope, and countless waterfowl from our tent. We saw the water buffalo on a game drive with an excellent ranger, who gave us good explanations of the wildlife and how they have adapted to their environment.

This is a small game reserve (only 1500 hectacres). It only has three of the Big Five (rhino, water buffalo, and elephant), although the rhinos are white and the elephants do not roam freely in the reserve. The reserve is significantly cheaper than all of the larger reserves around Port Elizabeth as a result. However, the location is great for visiting the Cango Caves and ostrich farms in the area. In addition, the quality of the accomodation in the superior tents, the food, and service, are on par with the more expensive reserves. Plus the reserve has numerous species of antelope, zebra, and giraffe.

If you don't want to spend the money for four nights at Shamwari, Lalibela, etc., near Port Elizabeth, I would recommend booking two nights at Buffelsdrift followed by another two nights at a larger reserve. You are then guaranteed to see more wildlife. We stayed at Buffelsdrift first, then at Shamwari. We saw the Big Five and so much more.

If you are in Oudtshoorn do not miss Buffelsdrift. You can stay here [--] but we just stopped by as it was recommended by some people we met that had stayed here. Its a beautiful place and when we were there they had three baby elephants (big babies) that we paid to feed which was a fabulous experience.

This was a last minute decision and what a joy it turned out to be.
We were booked on a [----] tour (an absolutely fantastic experience,i urge you to give it a go,more details in my trip report) and wanted somewhere to stay for a night. It's so good we stayed for 2 nights and would have loved to have stayed for more. A relatively new game camp lodge and they don't have lions but you'll get hippos thrown into the bargain and if you book a lakeside tent they'll provide plenty of entertainment!! They also have white rhinos, zebra, various antelope and wildebeest and 3 of the cutest baby elephants you'll ever see. Go on a safari bushwalk with them, it'll make your holiday.
The food is superb and the staff are friendly. The tents are out of this world !! We stayed at some beautiful places, woodall spa, hog hollow, lairds lodge, all fantastic places in their own way but the accommodation here and the lakeside setting was simply sensational.5 star luxury under canvass!!
lakeside bath views and outside shower experiences are the order of the day here and the birdlife is amazing too.
The additional money for a lakeside tent is well worth it and if you can, go for no 7,8 or 9 as they're closer to the floodlit watering hole, albeit furthest away from the reception area.
a recommended place to stay but do get on that meerkat tour as well, you won't be disappointed!!

We had booked a Garden Tour with Vacation Boulevard of Cape Town. They had organised a personal guide who also was our driver for a 6 day tour. We were picked up from our location at Gordons Bay near Cape Town and after a days travelling throught superb country we arrive at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge near Oudtshoorn for a 2 night stay. Its only been open for 14 months but has all the promise of being a special place. The Reception area with its bar and restaurant were superb and the tented accommodation close to the lake are really quite outstanding. We had a superb evening meal, part of the deal, and retired to our tent (see pics) to be awakened in the early morning to a sight of Hippos in the lake and Spring boks and Zebra down by the lake. We were booked for an early morning Game drive so at 7.00am my Wife and I plus our guide spent 2 hours being taken around their 1500 hectare site. We saw Giraffe, wildebest. zebra spring bok, loads of bird life but failed to find the Rhino. But our Game Guide was very knowledgeable, gave us loads of information about the site and delivered a good coffee at the high point of our journey. We returned to the lodge where we had a very good breakfast and then went to feed the Elephants. They have 3 young ones around 4 year old and they were a delight. It was a close contact and one that we would continue on the 2 nd morning of our stay. The rest of the day we spent in the Mountains around Swartberg Pass and they are quite magnificent with an afternoon trip round the Cango caves which are well worth the visit. Another very good meal at Buffelsdrift saw 2 very tired but happy people being lulled to sleep with the sounds of S Africa around us. The following morning after another good breakfast we did the Elephant walk. This is an hour plus stroll into the bush with these lovely animals. my Wife fell in love with them enjoying every minute of this special experience. Whilst the Game drive lacked the sights of the big 5 etc we found the whole experience of Buffesdrift to be special. They are new but will improve their game range but as we were to discover later on our 3 week holiday to South Africa you cannot guarantee seeing al the animals. All in all a very good experience and well recommended. It was luxury in the bush. We booked through Vacation Boulevard [--] and were looked after by Cheryl and Rosemary. Our Tour Guide was Graham. Contact at [--]

  • Liked — Being close to nature, good food and wine and great staff
  • Disliked — could not fault it
  • Tips/Secrets — Walk with the elephants, its great fun. Take the game drive, its very interesting.

This is a new game lodge just outside Oudtshoorn en route to the Cango caves. I stayed here earlier this month as they were running a superb special offer which compared very favourably with other lodges in the area.
I thoroughly recommend the fabulous tented accommodation - go for the superior rooms which are right on the edge of the lake. This is NOT the place if you want a safari with lots of big cats - there aren't any - in any case, if you're in the Western Cape that's unlikely to be your priority. However, it is surrounded by beautiful fynbos, it's easy to get to, and the service is excellent.
It's also possible to go just for a game drive or a drink / meal if you fancy whiling away a couple of hours in an idyllic setting.
