We spent one night here during a garden route tour.

The manager, Louis, was very friendly. The rooms are very nice chalets, which you access through the beautifully-landscaped gardens. Beds are a good size, as is the bathroom.

The place is geared up to tour groups rather than individuals, and we were the only people staying there, which felt quite awkward when we were having dinner in the evening, with one member of staff standing by until we left to go to bed.

The downside is it's out of town - as we were on a tour, so didn't have our own transport, that meant we were at the hotel from 4pm until 8am with nowhere else to go, so we did feel a little trapped. If you have your own transport it wouldn't be a problem.

The views from this hotel are superb the rooms are in buildings of 4 rooms and surrounded by gardens. A log fire blazed in the lounge. The rooms were well appointed but the hotel is well out of town and you will need your own transport if you wish to explore the town

From the moment we arrived at the Thorntree, we knew we were in a special place. And as luck would have it, we were the only guests that particular night. Since August is late winter in South Africa, there are not a lot of travelers. As a result, we had a beautiful room overlooking the valley with our own little verandah, and a gorgeous dinner of roast ostrich beside the wood fire in the dining room. We discovered when leaving that the staff had even washed our car! To say we were impressed is an understatement.
Our host, Louis, was most affable and quite willing to chat since no one else was there.
All in all, this is a beautiful classic country hotel offering the very best of South African hospitality, which is saying a lot.

Many thanks.

Whilst on our honeymoon, we stayed here.
Great location for exploring the surround areas. The rooms were clean and the staff were so friendly plus the food was lovely (we ate there on the first night)

Although slightly out of the town, don't miss the chance to stay here. The place is idyllic, the staff are superb, the service is spot on and it is so relaxing. It is ideally situated for the caves, wildlife park and the ostrich farms.
We had two nights and didn't want to leave.
If you're on your way from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth or going the other way, this is the place to stop!

We were booked in here for only one night on a touring holiday. It was excellent and we'd have been glad to have had more.
Good food, pleasant service, comfortable beds with considerable effort made to make the fairly limited space of the bathrooom attractive.
Our car washed in the morning and a very pleasing outlook from our garden room.
And a very relaxing atmosphere.
Just what was needed on a touring holiday!

We stayed in the Thorntree so that we could do the 'alternative' activities of oudtshhoorn....seeing meerkats and stroking a cheetah! They were fantastic. The accomodation we chose for our visit was equally good! The Thorntree site is a collection of small cottages. very modern and beautifully set amongst gardens, with lovely views to the mountains. A few miles outside of the town on the way to the Caves.
The rooms were large, modern and very comfortable. the garden setting, with vines growing over the cottages beautiful.
Being slightly out of town, the Thorntree offers dinner...nice and simple....ostrich, chicken, fish or beef. The food was exceptional value and taste. We decided to eat two nights rather than drive to a restaurant. The wine is pretty reasonable too.
Breakfast was typical of South Africa...multi-course, large, fantastic.
Louis, the host, was welcoming and helpful, as of course, were his staff team.
Overall, the Thorntree represents fantastic value for price and quality.
