“the best of South African hospitality”
Reviewed August 27, 2010

From the moment we arrived at the Thorntree, we knew we were in a special place. And as luck would have it, we were the only guests that particular night. Since August is late winter in South Africa, there are not a lot of travelers. As a result, we had a beautiful room overlooking the valley with our own little verandah, and a gorgeous dinner of roast ostrich beside the wood fire in the dining room. We discovered when leaving that the staff had even washed our car! To say we were impressed is an understatement.
Our host, Louis, was most affable and quite willing to chat since no one else was there.
All in all, this is a beautiful classic country hotel offering the very best of South African hospitality, which is saying a lot.

Many thanks.

Whilst on our honeymoon, we stayed here.
Great location for exploring the surround areas. The rooms were clean and the staff were so friendly plus the food was lovely (we ate there on the first night)

Although slightly out of the town, don't miss the chance to stay here. The place is idyllic, the staff are superb, the service is spot on and it is so relaxing. It is ideally situated for the caves, wildlife park and the ostrich farms.
We had two nights and didn't want to leave.
If you're on your way from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth or going the other way, this is the place to stop!

We were booked in here for only one night on a touring holiday. It was excellent and we'd have been glad to have had more.
Good food, pleasant service, comfortable beds with considerable effort made to make the fairly limited space of the bathrooom attractive.
Our car washed in the morning and a very pleasing outlook from our garden room.
And a very relaxing atmosphere.
Just what was needed on a touring holiday!

We stayed in the Thorntree so that we could do the 'alternative' activities of oudtshhoorn....seeing meerkats and stroking a cheetah! They were fantastic. The accomodation we chose for our visit was equally good! The Thorntree site is a collection of small cottages. very modern and beautifully set amongst gardens, with lovely views to the mountains. A few miles outside of the town on the way to the Caves.
The rooms were large, modern and very comfortable. the garden setting, with vines growing over the cottages beautiful.
Being slightly out of town, the Thorntree offers dinner...nice and simple....ostrich, chicken, fish or beef. The food was exceptional value and taste. We decided to eat two nights rather than drive to a restaurant. The wine is pretty reasonable too.
Breakfast was typical of South Africa...multi-course, large, fantastic.
Louis, the host, was welcoming and helpful, as of course, were his staff team.
Overall, the Thorntree represents fantastic value for price and quality.

Thorntree was an excellent stopover on the Garden Route. Louis (a bit of a dish to the ladies!) and his staff provided a very warm and personal welcome before leading us to our room. The 'rooms' are grouped in separate buildings thoughtfully placed around the rear of the main building and all are very tastefully decorated. Each has an outdoor patio area overlooking the gardens. The stylish bathroom has twin basins and separate towels are provided for the swimming pool. The standard of food and level of service at breakfast and dinner was excellent, crockery being decorated with fresh rose buds and petals from the garden to provide that extra touch. This Country House was perfectly located on the route from Montagu to Knysna and deserved a longer stay.

Thorntree really did exceed my expectations - We arrived and we advised that we were the only guests staying! We had a wonderful large family room overlooking the grounds. We spent some time drinking wine in the grounds and playing with the owners cat and dog! We then had dinner in the restaurant, which was lovely and an early night. We only had one night staying here and got up early to go to the Ostrich Safari at 08:30. They put on breakfast for us early and were on hand to help us with our bags.

The grounds are absolutely stunning and it is a totally relaxing place. Really worth a stay.
