Thorntree really did exceed my expectations - We arrived and we advised that we were the only guests staying! We had a wonderful large family room overlooking the grounds. We spent some time drinking wine in the grounds and playing with the owners cat and dog! We then had dinner in the restaurant, which was lovely and an early night. We only had one night staying here and got up early to go to the Ostrich Safari at 08:30. They put on breakfast for us early and were on hand to help us with our bags.

The grounds are absolutely stunning and it is a totally relaxing place. Really worth a stay.

We only stayed at the Thorntree Country House for one night, but we felt very much at home. The friendly staff and Louis the owner made sure we did! The rooms and common areas are elegantly decorated. When we arrived the rooms were a bit cold (that's what happens when you travel to South Africa in winter!), but luckily there was a heater in the room. And we had a lovely spot near the fire place in the restaurant for dinner. The food deserves a special mention: yummie and a 10+ for the presentation!

The Thorntree has beautiful gardens and is in a lovely location. We had interconnecting rooms for us and our daughters, which was good. Rooms were a bit uninspiring but spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was good - nice fruit salad, girls liked the pancakes best. We didn't eat here - went to Kalinkas which was good and Paljas which was excellent and very good value. Louis was a friendly host and we enjoyed rinks in the bar by the fire.

We stayed just one night and found the Thorntree rather functional. The grounds were immaculate but the rooms needed a makeover. They were spacious but a bit tatty, especially the bathroom. We suspect that one’s views of the friendliness very much depend on who meets you. Louis sent a great e-mail before we arrived and when one of us met him at breakfast he was great fun but we were introduced to the hotel by one of his more deadpan members of staff who read the script and no more. We were prevailed upon to have dinner there but the vegetarian menu was uninspiring and expensive, we ate really well in town at the Kalinka Restaurant, some of our party thought the best food we ate on our two week trip.

The location of Thorntree is excellent and the scenery lovely, the quality of the stay rather depends on who you meet when you get there. Breakfast was fine and the staff there much more communicative.

Would we recommend it - perhaps.

The various rooms were located in groups of three in large chalet buildings arranged around the central gardens with a swimming pool. The rooms were large and well appointed and the bathrooms were of a good size with a range of toiletries provided.
There was a small restaurant and a bar in the main reception building which were both comfortable although we had our evening drinks on a cool veranda. As mentioned by others some of the meals were a little strange in their presentation but if we had wanted UK food we would have stayed at home. All the food was well prepared and presented and the service was good.
We had only one night at the Thorntree on our trip along Route 62 to the winelands, but its peace and quiet left me wanting to stay longer and laze in the garden by the pool.
