My wife and I stayed at De Opstal for one night as part of our honeymoon tour of South Africa, and we loved the place. We arrived in the evening after a 5 hour drive from Cape Town and were shown to an amazing converted farm building. The room was huge with a large open fire, a King size bed, walk in shower and jacuzzi bath. The decor has been skillfully done giving the rooms a rustic feel but with a few modern touches. It was far better than we were expecting and the staff member took our dinner order for us there and then. Due to it being the quiet season there was only us and another couple staying at the hotel, but this only added a 'personal touch' by the staff. The food is excellent and I would recommend the ostrich steak. There is a small bar area where you can enjoy local beers and more importantly local wines which are very cheap compared to prices in South Africa.

I t was great heading back to the room with a bottle of wine which we drank in front of a roaring fire. Breakfast was also very good with a large selection of fruit, cereals and the usual bacon & eggs etc. The grounds are amazing with lots of quirky features and colourful foliage. There is a nice swimming pool and patio area but it was a tad on the chilly side when we were there so i bottled it.

De Opstal is also well placed for visiting the Cango caves and several of the Ostrich farms. The Cango caves are worth doing - especially the adventure - tour but be warned you have to crawl through two really small spaces called the 'devils chimney' and the 'letterbox'. The caves are surprisingly warm and there are also now lockers in which to put valuables coats etc. There are also staff patroling the car parks so your car is also safe whilst you visit.

In hindsight we both wished we had stayed at De Opstal for an extra night instead of hotels further down the garden route. If you stay here i am confident you will love it and i honestly can't say a bad word about the place

Travelling along the start of Route 62, we stayed at the De Opstal for 2 nights. On arriving we wondered whether we had the right place as the setting is so perfect and high quality. When being shown our rooms or should I say 'garden lodge', we were amazed at the size and decor of the lodge. Huge double bed, huge lounge and bathroom are just amazing. Previous guests photo's are just a small clue on this beautiful setting. We unfortunatly had a bad experience en-route to the De Opstal and 'Matilda' the proprietress helped us tremendously. We can't thank her enough for all her help and understanding, Matilda is a fantastic person! our stay at the De Opstal will never be forgotten and would recommend anyone to stay......God Bless.......from Sue & John , England

Stayed here for one night on the way home from our safari and we were just blown away. The staff greeted us as we pulled into the driveway. We were immediately shown to our room (which was perfect). The cottages are lovely and the grounds are just beautiful. The staff could not have been nicer! It was so peaceful and relaxing there. They even stopped by our cottage in the early evening to take our dinner order. It is a beautiful place to stay with a very friendly and accommodating staff. I would stay here again in a minute!

We stayed at De Opstal for two nights, 18 and 19 November 2008. What a wonderful place, so peaceful and the setting is amazing. Beautiful rooms, lovely gardens and the furnishings in the rooms are lovely. We arrived late and felt right at home - we did not even complete the normal check in processes, we were just shown to our lovely room and asked to make our way to the dinning room as soon as we were ready. The dinner menu is very ostrich based which is fine considering you are in the ostrich district of South Africa. The dinner menu is the same every day but if you fancy a drive into town for alternative choices then it is about 10 to 12Kms drive away from De Opstal.
Breakfast is lovely, just cooked muffins, fresh fruit and bacon/eggs cooked to your liking.

We could not fault the accommodation, price or setting of this lovely place and it is close to all the sites in Oudtshoorn. We visited the Cango Caves - be warned if you do the adventure route at the caves you will not be allowed to take large bags/back packs etc with you as they will not fit through some parts of the cave. You will be asked to leave them behind at the reception desk - there are no lockers etc so your bags are just left behind the desk - we had to do this and it make us rather nervous as we had only just exchanged our money so we were not happy about having to leave this behind in an unsecure place.

We visited the Highgate Ostrich farm which was ok - if you want the whole ostrich experiance we would suggest the you visit both the Safari and Highgate farms which are quite close together.

As for De Opstal - if you want luxuary, lovely setting and relaxed environment then stay here - it is wonderful and you could not ask for more at the price. The hotel website does not do the property any justice.

Arrived at this place from the dire Die Oeol Mill up the road - don't stay there unless you have a penchant for inbred boers and ghastly formica rooms.

Not only was De Opstal cheaper, but the room was like something out of a boutique hotel, huge, gorgeously furnished, with corner bath, real fire and fantastic verandah from which to admire the starry karoo sky.

Ttaff were incredibly friendly, and most pleasingly, they had black people in positions above just gardener or domestic - something I found quite rare in South Africa. They also offered to do all laundry by the next day at no cost - which was a great bonus.

I thought this was a real find in the area and was sad to leave.

Have just returned from 2 wonderful weeks in South Africa - our first visit but not our last!
We stayed 2 nights at De Opstal, arriving late in the afternoon after a long drive. Staff were most welcoming and our excellent room and the beautiful gardens ensured a restful and relaxing stay. Being located outside Outshoorn we opted to eat at the hotel restaurant on our first night, and following an excellent experience ate there on our second night too.
The gardens are beautiful and provide a fabulous backdrop to first class accomodation. Our room was huge, with a fabulous luxury bathroom and verandah to enjoy the evenings.
I would not hesitate in recommending De Opstal to others.

This B&B is located 10km outside of Oudtshoorn but this didn't matter as we stayed one night only. We didn't eat in the restaurant as we wanted to go into town but breakfast was a bit basic.
It was clean and tidy and satisfied us for the night we were there.
Best thing about the stay was the Ostrich Farm where we fed and rode on the Ostriches, plus a visit to Cango Wildlife Centre where I went into the cage with two white lion cubs - absolutely fantastic!
