“Second Visit Just as Good as the first”
Reviewed October 3, 2012

Lovely welcome from very friendly staff and owners.
Stayed in room 21 again, roomy, quiet with its own log fire. Excellent bathroom and shower, very comfortable large bed.
Enjoyed dining in both evenings with good (by the glass) wine. Small menu but enough choice and good quality food. Cool evenings so the wood burning fire in the restauant very welcoming.
Peaceful grounds for a stroll before a glass of wine on the terrace to see the sun down.
We wouldn't stay anywhere else in Oudtshoorn.

Excellent outstanding value and this being our 2nd visit, staff brilliant food excellent location out of town but definitely worth the visit.

The place to stay when near Cango Caves and OUDTSHOORN, ideal base when visiting this area

a place to chill whilst touring along Route 62

We only had an overnight stay here whilst we visited the caves, so the fact that it was out of town was not an issue. It was a quiet and tranquil setting which is exactly what we wanted, we could chill out around the pool without boisterous children/teenagers. Pretty, spacious and well kept gardens which had grapevines and pomegranite trees were just lovely. My partner arranged that we have dinner in the gardens as a surprise which was beautiful and made the stay really special the service was great. We did find it difficult on occasions to find staff during the day. The room was lovely and spacious with an open fire and big walk in shower. The breakfast room was a little dark but full of character, we weren't quite sure how breakfast worked as we wanted some toast with breakfast and were unsure if we were to prepare it ourselves, service was a little slow but we weren't in any rush. On the whole we really loved the setting, service could be a little better but staff were friendly and willing whenever we asked them for anything

We stayed one night in this charming, character filled location. Its a bit out of Oudtschoorn but is convenient for the attractions in the area. The room we stayed in was very spacious, with a generous bathroom and lovely walk in shower. We had a great dinner in a dining room which has you looking and noticing all the elements of the decor, all of which you know have been picked with careful consideration. The staff were all very welcoming and helpful in making the stay an enjoyable one.

If you are looking for modern, chrome finished, minimalist place to stay... De Opstal is not for you. If however you are looking for a great place to relax for a day or two, which is full of character with great food and helpful staff, then we would strongly recommend it.

Location: about 35 km north of Oudshoorn on the N328. Oudshoorn looks an interesting place, and you can ride a steam train from George to this town on certain days of the week if that appeals. De Opstal is on the left hand side as you drive north. An ostrich farm (well worth a visit as apparently very interesting) is about 200 metres away (but you would not know it),..and the Cango Caves (again well worth a visit on the Standard Tour) NOT the Adventurous One unless you do not mind crawling through small gaps.

Description: rather a sprawling collection of low level buildings, probably a farm in earlier times. Nice meandering gardens. Restuarant is rustic style and nice. Possibly a roaring fire at chilly times.

Rooms: varied. We were in a cottage looking down on the grounds towards the pool. The room was spacious and basic. Very comfortable. We were in a superior room, and probably worth paying more to have one of the two cottages that look down on the grounds. Could prove to be very romantic!!

Facilities: internet is not free and we thought quite expensive. Do not plan to use it, but catch up elsewhere before you arrive here.

Facilities: internet as discussed, nice swimming pool. Nice grounds to walk in. bar-b-que on some nights, nice grounds to stroll in, very countryfied location.

Staff: very nice and most helpful. We had fun with the fellows who have a great sense of humour.

Parking: secure and undercover.

Summary: Interesting stop-over. We had two nights and enjoyed the restful break.

Room Tip: Request one of the two cottages looking down over the lawns towards the pool. Cost abit more but wor...

Very interesting location near Oudtschoorn. We stayed in one of the farm cottages, overlooking the gardens and the swimming pool. Food average, but very convenient for many attractions. Very friendly staff
