“Neat place - ride them birds!”
Reviewed November 20, 2012

We came to Oudtshoorn with only one intent - do ride an Ostrich. And Safari delivered. We were guided around the property by Alma, who was very informative, pleasant and friendly. We had a good time viewing an ostrich hatch, and took in some facts about breeding and commercial value. After standing on some eggs, we went off to ride the birds. Thrilling experience - only wished it had been longer. For those who have seconds thoughts based on the indemnity form, take our word when we say it is safe and very much worth the remote / small risk. Thankfully, my wife and I were the only two in our group of 8 to ride, so we had our fair share of fun. While I felt the rides were a bit rushed, we did arrive late in the afternoon, so that did strain the staff on the end of day time.

Thank you for your review ! I am glad to hear you enjoyed the entire ostrich tour experience and had a fun time. The ride on the ostriches are quick so as not to stress the bird and not because of the staff. We are one of only 3 places in South Africa where tourists are allowed to ride ostriches by the Animal Welfare Organization. We gladly adhere to their rules since we value our ostriches and that's why the ride is short - we want you to enjoy the unique experience of riding in a safe enviroment for both the visitor and the ostrich. Thank you for your visit and feedback.

“Quite ok”
Reviewed November 13, 2012

The show farm didn't fascinate me that much I have to say. It was a nice attraction, and interesting to see the ostrichs and stuff, but without a ride on the ostrich it's fairly unspectacular and dull.
Our guide was super sympathetic, but since there was so much rain the days before we were there the ride on the ostrichs was not possible, so the trip ended disappointingly for me...

Thank you for your review ! The guided tour is approximately one hour long and the part where we allow tourists who weigh less than 70kg to ride and then see our poroffesional jockeys end the tour with a quick race is probably 5 minutes of the one hour tour. I am sorry you could not ride or see the race on the day you visited due to the rain we had during the days before your visit. When it's wet and the ground becomes muddy we stop the ridig for the ostriches' safety. We do not want to take the chance that they slip and break their leg and then we have to kill them to end their suffering. One can not fix a ostrich's leg once it's broken. We do not get rain often and you were unlucky to come visit us on one of those few days when we had rain and could not ride the ostriches. Hopefully yuo will come visit beautifull South Africa again in future and we will see you again. Thank you for your visit and feedback.

“Very good”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

We had a great experience here at the Ostrich Farm. As most other people said, we were greeted by a friendly host who explained the tour to us. We were ready to go on the tour within about 10 minutes, watched the video, learned about ostriches, visited all the different kinds, stood on ostrich eggs, held an egg, sat on an ostrich and rode on one....my daughter was the first one to ride the ostrich and we were a bit surprised when it ran instead of walked! It was funny to watch because she was so surprised! It was a lot of fun though! It was a very informative tour, well run and all in all, good value!

Thank you for your review ! Ostriches are very fast and can run at the speeds of up to 80Km per hour whch makes them much faster than the fastest man. Riding them in a very controled enviroment which is what we provide at Safari Osrich Show Farm is safe and quick. We let our visitors enjoy a short ride for the fun. As you say they do run though and can accelerate fast from a standing still position. The riding and race conducted by our local professional jockeys is only a small part of the one hour guided tour. Thank you for your visit and feedback.

“Wonderful!!!”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

I was on Safari on Saturday... When I stoped in the parking lot, a very friendly guide greeted us and gave a good description of what to exspect on tour. Best decision of the day was to go on tour with a well informed guide! Afterwards we ate lunch at the coffee shop and it was fantastic! Tast like home. The curio shop is very afforable comparing to place like Cape Town! Safari is not to be missed!!!

“Wholesome family fun”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

So my buddy and I wanted to ride an ostrich. That was one of our major goals for our South Africa trip. To ride a freaking ostrich. We are both not small men, standing about 6'1" and naturally about 185 lbs - just under 90kg. We wanted to ride them and saw all kinds of weight limits, mostly 75kg (165 lbs) and some mentions of 80kg (176 lbs). So with months to prepare, we began dieting (I was aiming for 80kg as I'm quite buff ;) and couldn't realistically get much lower than that without cutting muscle).
We researched all the different ostrich farms before going to see what the weight limits were and our chances. All kind of reviews give different ideas - and as we traveled in South Africa and asked ppl (we were sorta obsessed - though it was a really great motivator to be healthy) - they all said not to worry, that the ostrich farms don't care that much and we'd be fine.
So we get there and at first try Cango Ostrich and Butterfly farm - they were holding strictly to 75 kg, had a scale, and also the ostrich jockeys would decide in the end. These dudes are 5' tall and weigh about 10 kg. So we ended up avoiding that one as we heard that Safari Ostrich farm was less strict.
After Cango Caves, we drive back up through Oudtshoorn and to this place. Get there and find out their limit to ride (as in race) is 70kg - and they have a scale and weigh the crap out of you. So, that sucked. However, HOWEVER!! They allow up to 80kg to sit on the ostriches and take pictures. Which we did and it was spectacular. Though I felt sorta bad b/c these were not giant ostriches and so I tried not to put my full weight on it.
As far as the rest of the farm, we started with a little video, then toured the farm, seeing a variety of different ostrich species, emus, and got to stand on ostrich eggs to prove how strong they are. Then we watched a young lady volunteer to ride an ostrich and that was great - she was scared as hell and the thing ran all around (totally safe, 3 handlers were with her) and it was a lot of fun. Finished watching an ostrich race and bid adieu.
Good time.

Thank you for your review ! I am glad to hear you had a good tour even though you could not ride a ostrich because of the weight limit. We have the weight limit for the safety of the ostriches. The reason why the weight limit for sitting is 80kg compared to 70kg for riding is that whilst the birds are in the pen they have a chest support that means they do not feel your entire weight on them when you sit on a ostrich for a photo. Adult ostriches weigh between a 120 and 150kg and are very strong animals. I am delighted to hear you had a great time and thank you for the visit and feedback.
