It's extraordinarily difficult to grade this museum so I just gave it 3 stars.
It's a social history museum of life in Oudtshoorn and contains interesting artifacts from years gone by. It's a very out of date old fashioned museum and that's both its charm and its weakness. It's caught in a time warp in so much as there's nothing in the collection after 1960. It's as if time suddenly stopped at that time.
The old fashioned nature of the place means that it'll probably be the same in 20 years time and you almost expect the place to be old and dusty. If you know your Dickens it's like Miss Havisham's mansion in Great Expectations. The dusting and cleaning fairy must come round and do their job every day!
Kids will be bored to tears with this...no buttons to press or much to do except look. It's a shame that they never bothered...or could afford...to keep the place up to date. If you're a student of museums you must go there just to compare it with Pitt Rivers in Oxford, for instance.
It's a museum that deserves to be in a museum!

I happen to walk in on the museum during the festival. For someone that normally do not go to museums, I found it very fascinating. What a beautiful collection of very interesting pieces of memory in the history of South Africa and the Karoo.

From a vintage pharmacy to a synagogue. The sad stories of the old Karoo locals and the hardships they endured during their live to the feel good stories of the Polish orphans who found a haven in the Karoo.

Telling my daughter of the horrific battle of Delville Wood and about the survivors was a great bonding moment for us.

Plan to spend a time here as you will get drawn into amazing displays.

We had a good time talking about all the things I could remember from my early days. Nice for a short visit with kids on a rainy day
