We waited over 2 hours for our meal to be served. Service was totally useless, and management even worse. If it hadn't been so late, we would have decamped elsewhere. Problem was that the Sushi could not be prepared - whoever the Sushi Chef was, they were definitely not in the building. When it arrived, it was a very sorry sight - cut with blunt knives, horribly arranged and pieces missing. It was a complete and utter catastrophe. We complained to the manager who could only say 'sorry' over and over again. It never occurred to him that perhaps talking to us and explaining what the problem was may have helped, as would have deducting something from the bill, or bringing extra bread to the table, etc. etc. Not a clue. Only go here if you have hours and hours to kill.

This restaurant has no atmosphere ,nor a good manager.Place looks gloomy; should have painted it white...
Personnell was looking more at the screens watching cricket or rugby than looking after the guests .
Haven't been to an Ocean Basket since......and this used to be my wifes favorite restaurant.

This restaurant is not a good example of an Ocean Basket (all franchised). Atmosphere not great. Food not as appetising as other branches. Very disappointed with our meal - which was the basic fish and chips in a frying pan

We stopped at Ocean Basket as it was one of the first restaurants we saw leaving the place we were overnighting at. When we walked in on a Saturday night and there was only 1 other table occupied we were a bit alarmed, but entered none-the-less. The food wasn't terrible, but when it came to dessert we asked after the cheesecake (being baked or fridge) and the waiter told us that "all the desserts are frozen so they heat them up to defrost them" - not quite what you want to hear. Perhaps it's like that in all franchises? On the whole, our table was clean; the service fair; but next time we'd try one of the independent eateries along the main street instead (and there were many).

My girlfriend and I were camping at De Hoek Holiday resort just outside of Oudtshoorn a few weeks ago. On New years day we craved some sushi, and were delighted to find Ocean Basket open. We ordered a huge platter of sushi, and hake and chips to start off with. The fish was dry, tough and oily, but we had it anyway (we were hungry!!!). While having to fend off flies and other flying insects for about an hour, the sushi eventually came. Not only were the pieces flaccid and uneven, but all the avocado was brown, as well as some pieces of salmon. Our waiter reckoned it was fine to eat, but we insisted he inform the manager of the poor condition of our sushi. The manager explained that the sushi and avocado were just a bit overripe and we had nothing to worry about. At this point we sent the sushi back to the kitchen, where they threw the entire platter into the bin, and proceeded to re-make everything, without informing us of their intentions or any apologies whatsoever. Unfortunately for them, the sushi chef's "kitchen" was right next to our table. After waiting for another 10 minutes, I said we would rather like to cancel the sushi and pay for the drinks and hake we had. Thereafter, the waiter told us that we should try the sushi place around the corner, and even gave us directions to get there. I will never set foot in Ocean Basket, Oudtshoorn ever again, and I would advise other sushi- and hake-lovers to do the same.
