Very good restaurant. Fancy food. The staff were very friendly, the location is beautiful, I would say go there and give it a try.

“Fantastic setting, bad service, worse food.”
Reviewed November 24, 2012

It's as many reviewers describe, the setting is beautiful, the views are great, but apart from that everything lacks.

Waitresses are not trained well, have no knowledge of the menu and were uninterested in general. There was a manager on site but he wasn't too bothered to even glance at us. There were only 2 tables the day we ate there so being busy couldn't have been the excuse.

I had the Thai noodles, way too much oil, and bland. My wife had ordered chicken, now this is worth reviewing:

The chicken was completely bland, dry and tough, in short, we couldn't believe the chef sent out this plate of food, completely inedible.

We complained to the waitress but her only reaction was that she would inform the chef. That was it. No apology nothing.

Needless to say, we asked for the bill soon after, paid and left.

There are far better restaurants in Oudtshoorn, and at a fraction of the price.

“GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

On our recent vacation we dined at Su Casa @ the Surval Olive Boutique. The restaurant and surrounds are beautiful, but the food does not measure up to the standard we expected from them. We started our meal with the broccoli soup which was fair, but too much spice overpowered the broccoli. My husband ordered the prime rib steak - medium done (which is none other than a club steak!) with tarragon mushrooms and smokey garlic mashed potatoes with a red wine jus. The steak was so dry and tough that he left a lot of meat on his plate. Only 3 medium mushrooms and a bowl of mashed potatoes with a tiny amount of jus accompanied the steak. No trace of the promised smokey garlic in the mash! Overall it lacked color, seasoning and were in general unpalatable. I ordered the duck breast with duck leg confit and sweet potato ragout. I asked for green vegetables as I could not imagine eating a meal without any proper color. The duck breast was pink (as it should be) with a 5 spice jus, but the breast was tough. I don't know how their chef understands 'confit', but it was NOT done the right way. The leg was crisp on the outside (as it should be), but very dry on the inside instead of soft and moist. The confit was definitely not made the same day. The sweet potato ragout was bland and consisted of sweet potato, butternut and a tiny hint of fresh herbs. The manager's comment was: "we are working on changing the current menu," meaning that they are going to incorporate more 'color' onto the plates! We did not have a pleasant experience and will definitely NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone else. Their food is over-priced and fails to impress in taste and presentation. The service from our waitress was good though.

At Su Casa @ Surval it is our ambition to see that each one of our guests have a memorable dining experience. That is why we take each comment seriously, whether it is positive or negative and we strive to provide feedback accordingly.

Thank you for the kind comments on decor, the estate and the service. In response to your dinner experience, the prime rib steak is an ‘on the bone’ cut of meat, traditionally known for its flavour vs. the club steak (or Delmonico steak as it is known) which is a boneless cut of meat. I believe your husband did have the prime rib as we do not offer a ‘club steak’. You have mentioned that there had been a lot of meat left on the plate due to the steak being dry and tough, the chef has however reported that the plate returned with only the rib bone present and therefore there was no steak to investigate. I would however like to mention we have a strictly only “A” grade meat policy. The broccoli soup is a Thai Spiced style and this would account for the spicy flavour you commented about. You have also commented about an overall lack of seasoning as far as the garlic mash is concerned, and it being “unpalatable”, once again it was consumed in its entirety leaving us slightly quizzical about the comment.

Regarding the Duck, as you mentioned the style of accompanying veg i.e. ragoût is not to your taste and you prefer “green veggies” and as mentioned we did provide them for you. As for the flavour being defined as “bland”, it is of course difficult to respond on that, it is the 3rd item in which seasoning has not been to your taste, the first being the Thai Broccoli soup was too spicy, the mash-potatoes not being smoky enough and the ragoût being bland. Is it possible that it is a personal taste issue rather than a quality concern? Concerning the duck it’s self being dry on the inside, we experience the same difficulty in addressing this due to (as in the case of the steak) the duck was consumed in its entirety and we are unable to review it for that reason. We have always maintained a policy of “making good” on any meal that a guest is less than satisfied with. We would have enjoyed the opportunity to rectify that for you, had we been alerted to your concern timorously.

Regarding menu pricing, we at Su Casa @ Surval have two menu options, the Fine Dining menu (as you selected) as well as a Bistro option for those looking for a reduced options, something lighter or something for all budgets.

I am also aware that you had had an unfortunate day regarding vehicle problems and so forth and thus made use of our courtesy chauffeur service that is open to all our patrons. I trust that your vehicle was sorted out and that the rest of your journey was a pleasant one.

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to your review.

“Awesome Food, great for the family”
Reviewed May 1, 2012

We spent a lovely afternooon outside right by the play area. It was great - the adults could enjoy the homemade lemonade and the kids ran wild. Food was plated beautifully and was really good. The only downfall that the service was extremely slow.
