We stayed here for 3 nights on our "Route 62" trip. Everything about the hotel and estate is truly fabulous. We were misguided by our Garmin and got to the estate via a long dirt road from town, luckily we have a 4 x 4 so this was not at all stressful, however once Mark explained to us the short way in & out of the estate off the main road, this was a cinch.
What you see on the internet does not do the estate justice, everything is so well laid out & thought out. The grounds are stunning. We stayed in the Kalamata room which surpassed our expectations. It was huge, comfortable & beautifully decorated. The bathroom is divided off from the room by a bamboo clad wall and also very spacious and well appointed.
The main building which houses the reception, restaurant, function & conference rooms, offices and kitchen give one a 5* feel the minute you enter the front door, it is gorgeous.
We ate dinner in the restauranmt on our first evening and each had fantastic, tasty and well presented meals, a little on the pricey side but we thoroughly enjoyed the food together with the warm & luxurious ambience. Our breakfasts were great with a more than sufficient variety to choose from.
A wonderful experience and would highly recommend the estate. We wish them all the best with the challenges they have on their hands getting their signage approved by the local authorities which will help tremendously as this is a worthwhile stop on the Oudtshoorn map. We hope they go from strength to strength!

We stayed here 3 nights in the Cortena room, which was comfortable, spacious and nicely decorated. Loved the pebble shower and the blockout shutters. There is a big bath though we didnt end up using it because the bath water was yellow. The toilet is in the room but separated by a bamboo divider.

The location of the lodge is perfect, just out of town down a long dirt road, amongst the fields. The view from almost everywhere in the lodge (though not our room) is gorgeous. We found our stay peaceful and quiet.

Service at the included breakfast was disappointing. We waited ages to get a menu and on one occasion it took over an hour to be served our meal (an omelette). The breakfast was good though, and we also enjoyed the food from the bistro room service menu on our first night.

There is a decent sized pool (though always unmanned, byo towel) with a beautiful view.

All in all, we really enjoyed our stay here and would certainly return.

Thank you for taking the time to review us on tripadvisor.
The water mains of the town have had maintenance performed on them in recent times and this has unfortunately caused a discolouration, we are informed that the “drinking quality” is not affected by this. We do however hope and expect that the problem will be resolved speedily.
As to the service speed at breakfast on the 25th and 26th of December, I offer sincere apologies for this as that is by no means the standard to which we adhere. We will of course address the matter as a priority. I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed the first evenings dinner in the comfort of your room.
The info folder that is present in all of the rooms do contain details regarding the self service guest pool, as well as a mention that swimming pool towels are available for collection at reception.
I trust that your holiday in South Africa has been a most memorable one and may your 2013 be truly enjoyable.

I do agree with most of the reviews for this estate, however there are just a few tips for improvement that I would like to suggest. But first of all -most of the service here is impeccable! And particularly that of the guys managing this estate. We were originally staying for 3 nights but after being given x number of suggestions of activities to do and sightseeings to go to -we added another night. They helped out with the rescheduling of all of my other bookings along the way.
So to my questions/tips of improvement. First of all I wonder if the waiters have tasted the food and some of the wines themselves -it doesn´t strike me that they have. In a four star rating -I find it to be of outmost importance that the people serving actually know what they put on your table. Though I must stress that the food was absolutely splendid it self. Second. I believe that in a four star estate -your glass will be filled wether it is your water or your wine, whenever the waiter comes to the table. All the time. No exceptions -it should be in the back bone of a waiter. It doesn´t help that one or two of the staff do their outmost when the others don´t. Unfortunately. Because this estate and those who do, deserve to get the distinction of Excellent at this rating. Another thing that puzzled me was that they seem to take more care of their guests when there are more of them. Even though they had the same number of people serving and working there on thursday, the fire place was only lit on friday and saturday. Was I to think that we -the other guests staying there in the weekday weren´t as importaint as the ones joining in on friday/saturday? Same with the breakfast -in the weekdays the plastic was on the food -but in the weekend it was off course taken off. The fine dining restaurant was freezing cold, actually so cold that I had to warm up by the fire place in between the courses. Just fix these small things and I´ll gladly throw in the Excellent award for you :-)

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on tripadvisor.

Each one of our guests are important to us and the experience of each person is a priority to us.
I am sorry to hear that you got cold in the restaurant as all of the dining areas are air-conditioned and should be set to a pleasant temperature at all times. As for the food being covered, we keep all of the continental breakfast and serial breakfast items covered until the first breakfast guest arrive. At this point we uncover the breakfast for serving. Indeed we agree with you 100% that both water and wine glasses should be filled by your server at each visit to the table.
We value all feedback from our guests and strive to continually raise our standards of service.

We arrived late and were immediately impressed with the way the place was designed ... prompt service and great attentiveness to the smallest details possible made this a truly luxurious setting for the 4 nights that we stayed there for in August.
Mark, who takes care of the food and the service, was exceptionally entertaining and gave us great insights into the history of the place and the area in general. In fact, he was very well informed on several topics and added to our meal experiences - we feel priviledged to have met & interacted with him during our stay.
Charlene at reception was superb and a delight to chat up to ... it was nice to be pampered by the team!
The meals were excellent and very reasonable.
The access to the accomodation was a bit unsettling as we had to 'drive thru a river' ... for a place of this stature, it needs to be better equipped with a decent road approach sooner than later.
Will return and stay at Surval !

We stayed at Surval while on a road trip heading towards Nature's Valley: we planned on staying one night only but ended up staying 3 (making use of their winter special). We were so impressed with the beautiful surroundings, tasteful decor, friendly staff and excellent service. The breakfast / tea / dinner at Casa restaurant was delicious to say the least and worth every cent. There is more than enough activities to keep you busy - renting the bicycles and taking the gravel road is a must.
I would recommend booking the bigger rooms (superior) if you are planning to stay more than one night - its much more space for only a bit more.
Thank you Surval - we will be back soon!!

Room Tip: The bigger superior rooms are very nice
