Up before dawn to meet up to the taken to await the meerkats popping up as the sun comes up, and it's worth the early start. Devey was great and very knowledgeable, so much so that this is the second time we've done this.

An amazing adventure and Devey is an amazing guy, he knows everything about meerkats. On the tour he takes you to a field close to Oudtshoorn at sunrise, you just sit there and wait for the meerkats to wake up. There are a total of 17 burrows the meerkats live in and you never know were they are going to spend the night, so Devey goes there every evening to check in which burrow they are going to sleep, so he knows to wich burrow to go the next morning. Devey knows these meerkats for years and they allow him to come really close and bring people to see them.
It is so great to sit there and know that they are there and then suddenly... the first one appears, climbs on the burrow and stands up, warming up in the sun. And then another one... and another one.... Amazing!

Many, many apologies to Devey Glinister, I put my first review on Meerkat Magik and it was only when I read the reviews that I realised it should have been M. Adventures. We had an absolutely marvelous trip with him, got up before dawn cracked, sipped coffee and waited for these wonderful creatures who are habituated to people but not tame. We took videos and pictures and had a great time. We also received excellent photos of ourselves taking photos of meerkats!
A really unique experience.

Get up at 4.00am, sit in the dark with a cup of hot coffee and a rusk and wait for a magical hour. These animals are wild, they are not fed, they move burrows as the need to, they are habituated to humans and so long as there are no sudden movements or loud noises they completely ignore humans. We would go again in a heartbeat!

It's an early start, but what a thrill. Devey's timing was perfect: we set up our chairs around the meerkats' current burrow entrance, and a minute or two later a meerkat popped its head out and stood alert, then another and another and some babies until they were all out, facing the sun. They expose a panel on their stomachs to the sun, and get their metabolisms working. Really then, all they did was act cute, to perfection, the babies tumbling round and the adults making amusing rows, with their heads all turned in the same direction. Very photogenic.

Devey explained that there's no knowing how long this warming up procedure will take. When they'd had enough they scooted off to look for breakfast, and we did too.

You pay in cash at the end of the tour.
