“Best part of our trip”
Reviewed December 17, 2012

Our experience with Devey and the meerkats was the highlight of our trip. Devey is very knowledgeable on the lives of meerkats. He knew them by name and was able to distinguish each one in the family and their roles!! He never interferes in their lives and never feeds them. These are wild meerkats that you have the once in a life time fantastic opportunity to see up close.

Would not recommend this trip for children as you have to sit very very still for an extended period of time to observe the meerkat activities. My husband is a hobby photographer. He had a fantastic time getting close-up shots of the meerkats and their antics.

Absolutely fantastic and well worth the money (which Devey uses a part of to help further his meerkat research and rescue)

“Interesting thing to do”
Reviewed November 6, 2012 via mobile

Really something to consider if you have the time. You meet Devey, your guide to all things meerkat, at a prearranged juncture in the road about 5:05 AM. At 5:15 you follow him about 15 KM to a site where he provides tea or coffee. You then grab a fold-up stool & follow him to a meerkat burrow where you set up, all in a line, sitting very still & waiting for the meerkats to arise & warm themselves in the morning sun before leaving to forage. While waiting Devey provides you with meerkat information. He is just about as sweet as the meerkats who are adorable. They stand at attention & thus make great subjects for photographs. Because you do have to wait for them to emerge & sit quietly this isn't an experience for younger children but if your child can sit still & remain quiet, I think he/she would be entranced by the animals.

“Super early, but worth it”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

This is a tour led by Devey, an interesting fellow that has basically devoted his life to meerkats. He and his family have studied and follow this family on the deZookoe farmland every single day in order to give this pretty incredible experience. They're not domesticated as he doesn't feed them, so they might come near you, but mostly don't bother.
We woke up crazy early, was supposed to rain but didn't, and headed out, met him at the intersection of 2 highways, which was a weird idea but worked out well - no traffic and it's easy to see like 10 cars parked at an intersection.
Head out there, have some tea, coffee, and cookies, admire the sun rising, grab lawn chairs and head off towards the mound.
Sat there, after a while one came out, looked around for a bit, then 8 more eventually. They chilled outside, some playing, most just looking around, then after an hour or so, they went running off to forage.
They're really cool and you're really close, but for us they weren't like these crazy playing little monkey - they mostly stood around, some played, some chilled - but it was really cool to be there with them.
Devey is a great tour guide and we chose him b/c his reviews were better than the Magic place and I was really happy we did.
Oh - bring enough to pay in Rand!! We didn't and Devey was really nice and accomodating about it, but we felt terrible. Bring Rand.

“Wonderful morning”
Reviewed October 24, 2012

Ok so we got up at 4 am, to meet Davey at 5.30 but it was defiantly worth it. We were so close to the meerkats you felt that you were at one with them . To see them coming out of their burrows to sun them selves, to see them stand on guard, to see them cleaning out their burrows was magnificent and Davey is extremely knowledge about them.
Cost was 450 rand each, adults, worth every penny, about £32.

“A privilege”
Reviewed October 16, 2012

It was a real privilege to be able to sit that close to the Meerkats and have them go about their morning ritual mostly unconcerned about our presence. Yes it is expensive but definately worth it. It is not about the quality of the coffee or the lack of transport but about the experience and the time and effort that goes into maintaining the environment that enables Devey to offer this experience to us. And there is a good reason for the price not being less for children - they are more likely to be a nuisance and scare the meerkats as one did on our trip and we had to wait for the meerkats to relax and come out of the burrow again. The morning we went was overcast and a little wet and so we had to wait for some time before they woke up. This is not a stage managed show, it is nature. Also make sure you book a place in advance, the size of the group is limited.
