Stayed in the Wagon Room for 5 nights. As we had already paid we decided to tough it out.

Pros: Owner Mandie is very friendly & tried to supply anything we needed. The farm is peaceful with nice wald and streams.

Cons: All the furnishings were old bric a brac from the farm rather than purpose bought. Bedside mats were ancient grain sacks and gross. The bed was a solid cement 'pyre'. An old commode as bedside table kinda grossed us out too. Lights were naked bulb no shades. Hundreds of small centipedes crawled everywhere around the room & bathroom leaving excrement everywhere. The home made plumbing was a problem in that constant water drips were amplified and disturbing. Bath water had lumps of algae? floating in the brownish water. One wall had a huge ancient wedding dress in a frame which was spooky and shouldn't be there. The old wagon is cool but in a bedroom.....? Belongs in a museum and did nothing for the decor. Also the location is very far from the nearest towns on a poor dirt road. two damaged tyres later! Needless to say we won't be returning, ever

I recently spent the night in Kruisrivier Guest Farm. To be specific: in the stables. And guess what ? It was fantastic ! Basie & Mandi are great hosts, welcoming and helpful, the Guest Farm is perfectly located in the foothills of the beautiful Swartberg Mountains and for me it was a wonderful stopover on my way to Prince Albert. But you can easily spend far more time there than I did. I would recommend this to anyone. Great value !

We loved this spot for so many reasons - its quiet and peaceful, a real working family farm, near to Calitzdorp (the home of winning port), and the most wonderful friendly hospitable hosts. The Strydom family (Basie & Mandi and the 3 boys) welcomed us onto their farm with true South African hospitality from the delightful selection of salads and meat for our braai, to a huge farm breakfast the following morning. We had numerous laughs during my feeble attempts at having a conversation in Afrikaans (they do speak English), but all the while enjoying each other's company and learning about the generations that have been on the farm.

We stayed in the "Old Mill", and Mandi gave us the history while showing us around, and revealing to us our braai delights. We had plenty of wood and coals for a splendid evening out on the patio, next to the river, encapsulated by trees and greenery - a welcome respite from the hot karoo landscape.

The farm also caters for campers, large family accommodation, to comfy cottage for 2. Bring your own food, or enjoy their large breakfasts, and braai pack. The farm is close enough to various other areas of interest, or you can just take long walks along the river, or into the surrounding hills, or Rooiberg Mountains. Do not miss a visit to "Roger Young Photography" just down the road - simply superb. There is a large pool, overlooked by the ostriches, who keep their beady eye on you from behind their fenced grazing. The farm dogs kept us company, and enjoyed the long stroll we took early in the morning.

Their website is www.kruisrivier.co.za where they list everything they provide including the pricing. We found that this spot is exceptional value for money. We would love to stay again and again.

Room Tip: Such a variety of accommodation, I am sure there is something to suit nearly every traveller to the...
