We stayed at many fantastic places during our trip to South Africa and met many friendly people but without doubt Huw and Zoë were the friendliest people that we met, we were really made to feel at home here within minutes of our arrival. Our only regret was that we only got to spend 2 nights here. The Guesthouse is well located on the main road to several attractions and a few minutes walk to several restaurants, it is also decorated in a lovely way throughout and there’s gated parking. We stayed in a Verandah room which was very clean, and came complete with a TV, fridge and air conditioning. There was also a pool although the weather wasn’t warm enough to use it when we were there but in the summer I’m sure that it's very refreshing when the temp’s are in the high 30’s! As soon as we arrived Huw and Zoë sat us down and asked us what our plans were and provided advice on what to see, where to go, where to eat, and perhaps best of all how long you needed to enjoy each attraction. Oudtshoorn certainly has plenty to see and do for a couple of days at least if not longer, I can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t want to visit! Even in our short time here we managed to drive the Swatberg Pass, visit a winery and enjoy a braai, tour an Ostrich farm, pet baby Cheetah and have dinner watching hippo’s wallowing metres just metres away at sunset. The guesthouse itself is wonderfully located just a few minutes walk from the centre of Oudtshoorn and the décor is lovely throughout. The breakfast was also excellent and the muffins that Huw made were excellent!

Apologies to both Huw and Zoë for the delay in posting this review.

Tip. We stayed in numerous guesthouses on the Garden Route and without exception found them to be in better locations and run by friendlier people than smaller hotels. The owners are always proud of their area and will personally help you to make the most of your time there.

Our stay at 88 Baron Van Reede Guesthouse in late July last year was one of the highlights of our 5 week stay in South Africa. This was the perfect base to explore the beautiful surrounding areas of Oudtshoorn.
We had read the trip advisor reviews and were convinced that we couldn't go wrong staying here... and they were right. Our hosts, Zoe and Huw lived up to all the accolades we had read about them and so did their guesthouse.
Zoe and Huw’s hospitality was second-to-none; they were so helpful and informative, bright, cheerful, genuine people, with a sense of fun! Not only did they provide us with an impeccable guest room, they served us a hearty breakfast and were then happy to spend time helping us to best plan the day ahead in this stunning part of the country.
Taking an inland detour to Oudtshoorn (whilst travelling the Garden Route) was a great decision, as the Little Karoo is a not-to-be-missed part of this diverse and interesting country. The landscape is captivating and the early morning Meerkat Tour into the heart of their natural habitat, was amusing and fascinating.
We found Zoe and Huw to be unique hosts in that they did not seem to find their hosting a chore – it was apparent they loved providing guests with a comfortable place to stay and being genuinely friendly and helpful came naturally to both of them.
When travelling, our priority is to stay in clean, comfortable accommodation, that is well located, with helpful and welcoming hosts – 88 Baron Von Reede and Zoe and Huw met this perfectly. We recommend their guesthouse without hesitation!

All our Best Wishes for 2012!
Kerrie & Reg

Having just spent two nights at " 88" we would like to thank Huw and Zoe the owners for their hospitality. The greeting we got on arrival was genuine. The room was generous and well equipedas was the bathroom plus we had our own stoop The bed linen was white and pressed by far the best we have come across in south africa.Breakfast was very good and plenty of it " try the Muffins " . Any advise requested was freely given without being to pushy.Considering Huw and Zoe are new to the hospitality business , less than 3 years they are doing a great job, Good luck to them. As for staying there again most certainly.

88 Baron van Reede Guesthouse exceeded my expectations by far. Zoe and Hugh were wonderful hosts, entertaining us with interesting conversation and giving excellent suggestions for sightseeing and eating out. I couldn't have hoped for a better stay in Oudtshoorn and would definitely recommend it to friends. Hugh cooked breakfast himself, which, together with Zoe's fruit salad, was a plus to our stay!

I can't say enough about this B&B. It was the best accommodation we stayed in during our trip to South Africa and one of the finest B&B's I've ever had the pleasure of staying in ever, particularly given how incredibly inexpensive it is.

Strengths:
1) Character and decor: the B&B is located in an older building with tons of charm. The proprietors have done a phenomenal job of decorating the main reception and breakfast area with a modern and classy flair. There is an outdoor porch for breakfast outside, a pool, and a cool-looking lounge area attached to the breakfast area.
2) Location: The B&B is located in the center of Oudtshoorn within walking distance of all of the main restaurants.
3) Security: not an issue as there is a secured parking lot in the B&B.
4) Rooms: Our tastefully decorated room had a porch, comfortable bed, mini-fridge, working desk, TV, and a modern bathroom. There was free wi-fi and the signal was very good. The owners clearly took time to think about the "little things."
5) Value: Amazing that so little was charged for such a great place.
6) Breakfast: another huge strength. Huw, one of the owners, is a very talented chef and will cook omelettes or other breakfast dishes to order. I found that most South Africa B&B's did the standard English breakfast pretty well, but Huw took it to another level. We also took advantage of the generous continental breakfast spread.
7) Owners: Zoe and Huw are GREAT. The "check-in" process was very quick in terms of logistics, but then they spent 30 minutes with us explaining everything that there was to do in and around Oudtshoorn. They offered to make dinner reservations as well. It was so nice to have a local spend that much time going over the things to do in the city; based on some of their tips, we discovered things that our guidebooks otherwise had not mentioned. Zoe and Huw, in my mind, are the #1 reason to stay here - we travelers should support people who have such a clear passion for enhancing the experience of their guests.

Basically, this was a wonderful place to stay, and I wish we had had more time to spend there. We really can't say enough good things. Kudos to Zoe and Huw for their brilliant B&B .
