Zwartberg View Mountain Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 27, 2013

We were a group of 6, occupying all 3 of the mountain lodges in February 2013. Everyone had an absolutely amazing time and if you're considering a stay at Zwartberg View Mountain Lodges- we couldn't reccommend them enough!! They are off the beaten track and waking up in the morning, truly feels like you're in paradise!! Jann (the owner) is a great comical character who has certainly paid a lot of attention to detail both in the lodges and at the dining decking area, where both breakfast and a 3 course dinner are served each day. The lodges were all well decorated, spotlessly clean and tidy and although they don't have air conditioning, we were given fans to help cool the room down in the February heat. The decking space where you have your meals is surrounded by a few springbok, zebra and a gorgeous little bush pig who are all well looked after by Jann- this truly added to the whole experience. The table decorations were simply gorgeous and the food was simply out of this world!! Easily the best food we had while on our South African travels. All meat was locally sourced and freshly prepared, while you sat around the fire, having a few drinks from the bar. Jann also kindly catered for a vegetarian friend- who left saying he'd quite happily come back and stay there again, purely for the food!! The whole experience from the accommodation, the location, the animals, the food, the staff, everything- was just fantastic. We already can't wait to go back!!

If there is one thing any reader of our reviews can be exactly certain of is that our reviews are not only 100% genuine, but heartfelt as well - our reviewers always seem to go beyond the very obvious, the beds, the bathroom and the towels to include some of the elements I personally think make for an exceptional experience. As far as I am concerned, the quality of experience IS
the measure, and when guests return home after staying here we should become as much a part of their holiday memory as the elephants, lions and whales they might also have seen.
Yes there will be those stung by a bee, nibbled by a bushpig, burnt by the sun - but when all is said and done, we will keep trying to provide something unique, desirable and memorable to
everyone who stays here !

Stayed at Zwartberg Lodge in November 2011 on our first visit to South Africa and enjoyed the experience so much that we returned again in January this time with our parents. Again a very unique experience and enjoyed by all. Jan is an excellent host, great cook and a very interesting conversationalist. The little bush pig is just adorable!

Good value for money with fantastic service and an added bonus, the views. Would strongly recommend as part of anyones tour to Cape Town. We will be using this retreat again in futurem The food and presentation thereof was of high standard and the service was fantastic. Beautiful to have aninals so close to the Basekamp where breakfast and dinner are served. I don't think there are many places where you actually have breakfast and dinner with zebra and springbuck. What an experience!Jann, the host, is an interesting person who can touchdown on any subject. Voversations with him were so great! The rooms were well prepared when we arrived. The decor is stunning - real African touch. Very comfortable rooms with awesome views os the mountains. This part of our journey is still going to be talked about allot in future.

The Good: Fantastic location, Quirky host (you either love him or hate him), Away from it all feel,
The Bad: Subpar bed linen (they looked suspect), strange bugs that will bite you - my wife AND the owner of this lodge both got stung by hornets nesting at the gate!!! I was bitten by don't know what (spider?) while sleeping - the swelling lasted a whole week......an we are not city softies by any means.
Worth a one night stint.

Every review is important to us !!
We can never assume that because everything is wonderful, this is how it will remain.
Tripadvisor reviews keep us up to date with what our guests think, where we need to improve
and what we need to do to remain at the top.
Each of our suites is themed and decorated accordingly, even the bed linen is not standard,
but in colours and styles that match each suite - we should not have any sets that are older
than six months and every set is removed from the beds immediately guests check out and sent to the laundry.
Wildlife and especially insects are more difficult to control - particularly in summer !
Although this is the first recorded instance of not one, but two bites from different species.
We ourselves are always hesitant to use poison to kill insects, secondary poisoning will
then kill birds and even our motley crew of agamas, geckos and skinks will die after ingesting
poisoned insects. We do however provide each chalet with insect spray just in case !
We do not have any sort of spider problem here in general, and the wasps are usually quite
peaceful - in this instance though they did make a nest in the gate ornaments and got upset
when the gate was opened - the wasps have now moved on !!
It is never nice to be bitten by the wildlife when on holiday and we apologise in this instance !

No words to explain the unforgettable experience we had with Jann (the carismatic boss), Indiana (the lazy beatiful little dog) and Celest (the funny young piggy).
We really reccomend this lodge, great dinner under the stars and huge breakfast.
Hope to come back soon!

What an amazing place to wake up to.
Staying here 2 nights has been wonderful.
We arrived in the afternoon and enjoyed a great dinner with another couple (it would be 6 pax max at the dinner as there are only 3 chalets).
The next day we visited a ostrich farm, the cango caves (go for the adventure tour! make sure you know when it starts so you dont have to wait an hour like we did) and mastered the swartberg pass and it has been one of the best days of our trip.

It's a bit of a challenge trying to find the right words to express what a wonderful place this is. We stayed for only one night and as soon as we arrived wished it was longer . Jann is a a superb host, despite there being just us two at the lodge the night we stayed he made us feel very welcome, cooked a fantastic meal and chatted with us for hours. The setting is spectacular and the rooms well appointed and comfy. It all comes together to be one of the most special places we have experienced and one which I'm reluctant to share in case we can't get a room next time. Jann, Indiana and Pig thanks for everything
