“A Delightful Place”
Reviewed February 5, 2012

I stayed here with a small group of German tourists for one night. We were enchanted from the moment we swung onto the property which lies along a hardly used country road. Humorous road signs like "Nelson Mandela Boulevard" perched among acacia Karoo trees guided us up to the dining area/boma and Jann's main house. He was there to meet us, with interesting anecdotes, jokes and genuine hospitality. He has created a restful haven among the stunning backdrop of the red stone conglomerate foothills of the Swartberg mountains. His resident herd of Springbok (including one unusual black one) and zebra and some other sundry antelope species were to be seen browsing contentedly in the Karoo bush. They also came to eat right next to us when Jann served us a knockout 4 course menu for dinner. Jann doubled up as cook, host and waitron. After dinner he made us all double up with laughter at his Christmas tree light demonstration, alternating various colour lights which flashed at different intervals. He could be a standup comedian, with his quick humour and acerbic tongue. He is obviously also a very talented artist, evident in the way in which he has decorated the guest rooms and landscaped his natural karoo "garden".
We were sorry to have to leave the following morning, and will definitely be back, to do some of the hiking trails Jann has laid out on his lands.

Room Tip: The y are all quiet and equally beautiful, although each decorated to a different theme.

Reading the story of the birth of the lodge in the specially made journal left in the room was like the icing on the cake. It gave depth and understanding to what is an Idyllic place to stay. Jann obviously enjoys having guests. He has gone out of his way to make the rooms special and comfortable. He spends time chatting in the evenings after cooking the mouthwatering meal on the braai. If you want a peaceful break close to nature in beautiful surroundings you will find it hard to beat Zwartberg View Mountain Lodge.

This was our second time....and it won't be our last! What a wonderful experience of Karoo hospitality against the backdrop of the gorgeous mountains and views that go on forever. Jann is a magician with a braai fork and a dog, who has turned this spot into a veritable haven of relaxation and good food. This time we also got introduced to the game - Zebra, Springbok, Ostrich, Nyala - who all enjoy "dinner" with the guests in South Africa's very own "Baghdad Cafe".

The breakfast and dinner are superb - but unlike we did - please indicate your food tolerances. Jann is quite happy to accomodate, and even turned out some gluten-free pancakes! The outside dining-deck - complete with conversation fire-pit - is perfect chill space under the stars, glass of wine in hand, as dinner is prepared specially for you in the outside kitchen. All this while you are entertained in conversation with Jann - owner, chef, chief cook and bottlewasher- as he prepares the meal.

The cottage is cosy and provides comfortably for a romantic getaway. Maybe 100% cotton sheets would be the only addition I could think that would really make a difference on those hot Summer nights!

But it's the peace and quiet, the time to think, the space to be and the privileged of being served by Jann (and his dog, Indiana) - that makes Zwartberg View Mountain Lodge our preferred stay in the Outshoorn area.

You won't be dissappointed - except if you have zip-sense of humour and need a TV to keep yourself entertained....

I would like to take this opportunity to express how much all these reviews mean to me personally.
There is no question that what sets one lodge apart from the others are the people who run them. ..you don't always know if what you do is right - you can't always be sure that
what you try to do to make this lodge not just an overnight stay, but a true destination is exactly
what people want, or even expect. It is the reviews that prove I am on the right track !!
...and each one is a gem !!
I will continue to do what we do for everyone who stays here and maybe one day we'll join the
Swartberg Pass, Meiringspoort, the landscapes and peacefullness as one of the main regional attractions - I will not stop trying !!
Thanks to everyt single reviewer.

Just what we wanted. Isolation within easy reach of main tourist route. Well appointed, great meals if wanted, and wonderful Karoo scenery and night skies. Jann entertaining and informative. Reliable and personal with booking, required no deposit and catered for dietary foibles. Wonderful walks, drinks around fire with zebra and springbok and ostrich looking on. Lodge comfortable, very clean, private - an instant opportunity to unwind. Highly recommended.
Thanks again Jann. Sue and Jon ( Australia )

Good beds, clean bathroom, no insects, panoramic scenery, very few other people, wildlife willing to come in close (no sudden movements please, and don't step off the deck). Harold & Maude offered close up and personal with ostriches, if you have not experienced that. Jan's food was delicious and his views on the environment entertaining and thought provoking. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: All the same.

This was a most entertaining stay in a glorious part of sth africa. The accommodation consisted of 3 separate couples lodges. They were very clean, tastefully decorated and we felt at total peace in the heart of nature. To our delight we finally saw zebras!!! And the other animals such as antelope and ostriches were very accessible. Jann was a most entertaining host whom sets a beautiful table and cooks a great braai. We were very well looked after and enjoyed janns nuttiness enormously.

Just a hop outside Oudtshoorn lies this place. We booked out the three bungalows, so apart from the self-catering unit, we pretty much had the place to ourselves for hikes or just to sit on the wooden porch and watch the mountains. Jann and Hannelie made an amazing braai for us and a fire was roaring in a fireplace sunken into the wooden deck, with tame sprigbok and zebra eating their feed around us while the resident ostriches Harold and Maude regarded us with beady eyes from their camp.

Jann is a perfectionist, and the place was built with an astounding attention to detail. It was a great place to stay.
