La Pension Guest House
Ranked #2 of 77 Oudtshoorn B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed November 10, 2009

Our second stay with Errol and Venita at La Pension. We were impressed when we stayed with them last year but the make over has produced one of the most tasteful and luxurious B &Bs of the twelve we have stayed at this year. You are greeted with a warmth and an interest in your experiences to date and your plans for the rest of your stay. The garden is magnificent and if you want to talk plants your hosts will be only to happy.
There is a large pool with Sauna which is surrounded by shrubs and trees and a honesty bar with shaded area over looking the garden.
La Pension is a three minute drive from the centre of Oudsthoorn which is well supplied with restaurants but alas no bars. We use as our favourite Jemimas. After our visit we read they had been chosen as one of the top 10 restaurants in South Africa. I can't comment but after dining out for 34 nights in probably 24 restaurants it certainly came within our top three.
A favourite trip is over the Swartberg Pass to Prins Albert. This is an unmade road that winds ever higher. The scenery views and rock formations are awesome. Another treat is the Waterfall, not far away but this was recommended by Errol. Without him we wouldn't have known it was there.
A Three Star B & B that should be Four Star.

We didn't make any reservations and we just kinda popped in by accident at this B&B and we just loved it there. Venita and Errol are the best hosts ever, very friendly, helping out with whatever querrie you (might) have. We were to stay only one night there but we prolonged it so we could see some other stuff in the Oudtshoorn area that they suggested. the whole stay at La Pension was the best experience we had during our stay in SA. The B&B itself is quiet, very well located, nearby the city centre with some nice restaurants. All of this is on walking distance. The rooms are very nice and spacious. This is exactly why we choose to stay in a B&B, it is so much more personal then when you're staying in a hotel where they don't care who is in at the moment. Thanks you guys

Errol and Venita are amazing hosts and could not have been more welcoming. They were extremely helpful in giving us great suggestions on how to spend our two days in Oudtshoorn. The accommodation is excellent and extremely good value for money. Our room was large, comfortable and very tastefully decorated. The garden is full of flowers and we thoroughly enjoyed relaxing there by the pool in the evenings. The breakfast is delicious and beautifully presented (we enjoyed the fruit skewers etc).
La Pension is within easy walking distance (or a short drive) of a whole row of restaurants and we felt very safe walking around on our own in the evening. We visited the Cango Caves, Highgate Ostrich Farm and Prince Albert (via breathtaking Swartberg and Meringspoort passes) easily from La Pension/Oudtshoorn.
In short, La Pension combines a very high quality of service and accommodation with a lovely, relaxed atmosphere.

My wife and I stayed here at the tail end of our honeymoon. Not only is the place immaculate, new remodeled, and chic, but the owner is incredible. She takes great pride in ensuring her guests are comfortable and enjoy their stay.

We arrived without reservations in the early evening, and had checked several other nearby b&b/Self-catering places. La Pension was by far the nicest and maintained a reasonable rate.

In the mood for a braai, the owner got to work getting the fire going as we went out to secure our meat for the meal. A traditional style braai with burning wood was awaiting our return as was a nice glass of wine for us both.

In addition to every detail being attended to, the owner is also very knowledgeable about the local area and is very helpful suggesting things to do.

While I may not be a great writer of reviews, in fact this is the first I've ever written....we thoroughly enjoyed our experience here. Again, everything was --- Outstanding!
