Karoo Soul Travel Lodge & Cottages

I arrived in Outdshoorn having stayed ath Outdshoorn backpackers a few years back and I was looking for something different. Karoo Soul was just what we wanted. We tend to self cater and the kitchen was in great up keep, acutally everything seemed to be brand new. They put food out in the morning including eggs and bread and such and you can prepare your own breakfast how you want. We stayed in the main house and had a huge bed and a leather sofa, it felt more like a B&B than a backpackers lodge. The staff were great with tour and activities, they didn't try to sell us anything but gave a discount vouchers for things we asked about. The succulent garden was a great place to kick back and relax and the blonde lady that was in charge was super friendly. One of the best backpackers on a 10 month trip!!

Judging by the previous reviews we wondered if we stayed at the same place! We had a great stay and only wished it could have been for longer. Our double bedroom, in the main house, was huge, clean and comfortable (perhaps better to get a room in the main house going on previous reviews). There were nice views of the surrounding landscape and we particularly enjoyed watching the sunset whilst in the hammocks with glass of wine in hand. The kitchen was fine to use but the braai area was the pick of the pair. There was a large gazebo and pool area which was nice to chill out in after a long day. We couldn't fault the place but it probably suits the more relaxed, low maintenance traveller.

We stayed two nights at Karoo Soul and had booked the double ensuite. As soon as we arrived we wanted to cancel our stay. It was a gorgeous hot summer's day and the 'garden cottage' given to us was a dark, claustrophobic shed with only a couple of barred windows, low ceilings and no outlook. The 'private courtyard' was a concreted walled area with no view or opportunity to enjoy the weather. We viewed the rooms inside the house which were MUCH nicer (wooden floors, high ceilings, great views from the big windows onto the garden), but shared a bathroom. We tried to swap rooms but they were booked. It didn't seem right that the shed was R80 more expensive... After accepting that we were stuck with the accomodation, we decided to make the best of it and just enjoyed the grounds. There is a small pool which is good for a quick cool off (the pool wasn't very clean and had a pool vaccum cleaner in it the time we were there which meant we couldn't swim.) We made use of the kitchenette that was in the room which was well set up. The bed - although two single beds pushed together - was really comfortable (my husband thought it was a bit hard) and the linen was clean. There was a strange ant issue in bed with a few of them running across pillows. The hammocks around the property at FAB, we spent a lazy afternoon / evening chilling out in the twin hammocks, having a beer and chatting while the sun went down. The lodge is too far to walk to town (and there's not much to do there anyway!) so you'll need a car. Overall, it was okay but I wouldn't recommend the double ensuite. I think that our expectations were probably too high, but thanks to the great weather we had a good time.

We stayed at Karoo Soul for one night in Nov 09 and found it to be so bad we stayed out to dinner as later as possible that evening, and left early the next morning. The room was described as a double en suite and turned out to be what looked like a converted garage with bars on the window and door. The temperature the day we arrived was well into the 30s and with no fan in the room it was like a concrete oven. The room comprised two hard single beds pushed together and makeshift furniture and the overall effect was shabby. Outside the room was a sad looking table and chairs covered in dead leaves and flowers.

After checking in we went out for the afternoon, and returned to find a large infestation of ants in the corner of the room. Upon telling the owner/manager she simply sprayed the corner and wiped up the mess - badly. Not even an apology. We went out for dinner that night and stayed out as late as possible to avoid going back to the room.

On top of the poor room, we found Karoo Soul to have an unfriendly atmosphere. Staff interacted with us as little as possible and were on the verge of rude most of the time - making conversation with them was difficult. At one point we approached them to ask if they had a UK/SA adaptor (we had left ours at the previous place by accident). They didn't, which we knew was a long shot, but upon asking if anywhere in town would sell one, this also elicited blank faces and no suggestions - un-helpfulness personified. We subsequently found multiple electrical shops selling adaptors in town ourselves.

The only conclusion we could come to is that the rooms in the main house (with communal bathrooms) could possibly be nicer. However, I would definitely not recommend this place to anyone due to our bad experience. It also states being within walking distance of town, but I would be unsure about doing the walk at night.

Poor room and poor service led this to be the worst accommodation we had on our two week trip, and although it is cheap, it does not offer value for money and I would suggest looking elsewhere.
