Fans of the Foodbarn since it first opened very modestly with just a few raw tables and chairs, we re-visit annually and have enjoyed every meal in this now quite chi chi restaurant. The summer menu this year was quite limited and many dishes we recognised from years gone by, but then turn the menu over and there usually is a specialty that might catch your fancy.

Like so many restaurants in Cape Town this year, the line fish was limited to Hake, (or as we Kaapenars call it Stockfish) and an extra charge for imported salmon - no kabeljou, no lovely fresh Cape Salmon, Red Roman or any other of the really tasty fish that are caught locally in summer - what a disappointment.

We visited there twice in the space of a month and the second time I opted for the three course lunch special because I like veal - and it was delicious and tender. The starter would have been more than enough for two people to share considering there were a further two courses to follow - a summery tomato plate with two miniature baked cheese in the center. Dessert was simply too much but so decadent (and too complicated to recall the details!) but utterly delicious.

If not eating the menu, choose the fresh fruits smothered in sabayon served with almond ice cream on a tuile - delicious.

Noordhoek is underrated. Apart from its lovely long sandy beach made famous by the film Ryan's Daughter, it offers a rural and peaceful setting for families and other non city slickers. When Franck of La Colombe fame came to this little village, he brought with him classy food and home made bread. The villagers love him. And so The Food Barn was born. Our visit last Sat was a a superbly orchestrated one - the sun was shining, the children not so noisy, the nearby restaurants filled with just the right amount of people, and the parking lot was just about full. We brought our dog with us, and sat on the left hand side of the covered patio, away from the playground and the other diners. He (our dog) loved the attention too - a fresh water bucket, and his own furry bed. The summer menu is tempting but 3 courses for lunch was a little too much. Also it would mean more alcohol, which is never a wise idea. So we opted for the a la carte. Our seafood starters were sensational (see photos). Need I say more? My partner's filet steak was sublimely prepared - medium rare to perfection. My ox tripe was an adventure because I never cook it at home. And it was OK. A bit watery and not enough oomph. I prefer the other (late) Frank (Swainston of Uitsig)'s chilly version. Still, I enjoyed the green salad, and the lovely wine. The setting could not be better. The waiter James was charming and attentive. The manager came out to greet us and the other staff members came to see if the dog needed more attention. What a marvellous place.

One goes to eat a meal at the Foodbarn as a bit of a treat and so it proved this time. The food is imaginatively cooked and presented although not as exotic as La Colombe when Franck established that as a gourmet's delight. This time the fish eaters had the best of it as the Karoo lamb was a little over cooked and chewy. The service was cheerful and efficient and the ambience was described by one of our party of 6 as "cosy".One is spoilt by having the Foodbarn as your local and we will continue to visit as often as the occasion demands.

I live in and love Noordhoek. So does internationally reknown chef, Franck Dangereuse, who puts all of this passion for the area into his three eating experiences on the one property. The bistro is fine dining and superbly romatic ambience at its best. I have eaten there often, and never been let own by the excellent service and wonderful food. The foodbarn deli across the carpark, has superb coffee, tea, breakfasts and lunches, and turns into canlelit tapas wonderland at night. Local or visitor, make this a definite stop sometime soon!

I have a sweet tooth. Ordered three various deserts. Loved it. Never come to Cape Town and not visit the Foodbarn. The standard always the same. To me...of all the restaurants I visit....the best deserts!
