Fans of the Foodbarn since it first opened very modestly with just a few raw tables and chairs, we re-visit annually and have enjoyed every meal in this now quite chi chi restaurant. The summer menu this year was quite limited and many dishes we recognised from years gone by, but then turn the menu over and there usually is a specialty that might catch your fancy.
Like so many restaurants in Cape Town this year, the line fish was limited to Hake, (or as we Kaapenars call it Stockfish) and an extra charge for imported salmon - no kabeljou, no lovely fresh Cape Salmon, Red Roman or any other of the really tasty fish that are caught locally in summer - what a disappointment.
We visited there twice in the space of a month and the second time I opted for the three course lunch special because I like veal - and it was delicious and tender. The starter would have been more than enough for two people to share considering there were a further two courses to follow - a summery tomato plate with two miniature baked cheese in the center. Dessert was simply too much but so decadent (and too complicated to recall the details!) but utterly delicious.
If not eating the menu, choose the fresh fruits smothered in sabayon served with almond ice cream on a tuile - delicious.
