“Hotel with awesome view of Cape Town City Centre and Table Mountain”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2008

I have just returned from my 5th business trip to this 4* hotel which has magnificent views of Table Mountain, Cape Town city and surrounding areas from the deluxe sea facing room. This hotel is situated in Milnerton, approx 15 minutes drive along Marine Drive from the V&A waterfront where many delectable restaurants are to be found.
When I arrived and checked in at 9pm, the front desk had problems with the electronic keys which was resolved but could have gone a lot quicker. The hotel lacks ambiance due its vast lobby and the sparse furnishings. If you are looking for a quaint hotel with a homely feel, this would not be the right hotel for you. The hotel has a bar with huge sliding doors leading onto the patio where one of the pools are situated. The restaurant which serves breakfast is unfortunately also considerably big, which means if the hotel is not packed to capacity, you feel slightly lost in that vast room.
I was pleasantly surprised on entering the room to find a complimentary bottle of red wine and a bowl of small cakes. The king size bed, with its firm mattress and big fluffy cushions, is conveniently situated for easy TV viewing on a large flat screen TV. As a business traveller I appreciate the channels such as CNN/BBC. Unfortunately they do not cater for any “small” guests who would definitely lack Cartoon Network or similar. The bed is made up with sheets and blankets. The mini bar, which is located in the cupboard under the TV can be stock, if requested from the hotel. A mini safe is placed in the cupboard in which I store all my valuables. The cupboard has ample hanging space for 1 person and a full length mirror is to be found against one of the cupboard doors. The room has a 2 and 1 seater couch with a small coffee table as well as a writing desk with reading lamp and phone which is suitable for business travellers.
The bathroom, with separate toilet (which has its own phone), is small i.e. not much space to move. The shower itself is huge and the bath big enough for a large person to lie in. The towels are clean, big and fluffy and are replaced daily. Soap/Shampoo/Body Lotion etc is replaced daily.
I made use of room service regularly for both refreshments and food. The food was delivered hot and tasted wonderful and the presentation was great. I was advised, upon placing my order, that I would have to wait approx 30 minutes.
I did not have breakfast, but took the liberty of having a cup of coffee on the patio outside, next to the pool. I did not get charged for this cup of coffee and the staff cleaned the table and chair outside that I was using, without being requested to do so.
I ate at the Wang Thai restaurant situated alongside the hotel. The food they serve is Taiwanese and they prepare the most delicious sushi. I have never been disappointed during any of my previous numerous visits to this restaurant. I highly recommend this restaurant. I walked through the hotel and had a short walk along the road to get there. I felt totally secure.

We stayed in a self-catering apartment at the Lagoon Beach complex in October 2006 and made use of some of the hotel facilities

The hotel is located on the beach at Milnerton, about a 15-minute drive north from the V&A Waterfornt in Cape Town. (Taxi fare about €15). The suburbs between Lagoon Beach & Cape Town are not the most salubrious, though Milnerton itself seemed fairly well-heeled. Milnerton 18-hole golf club is less than a mile away, directly up the coast.
While the Atlantic seemed a little cool for most swimmers, there was quite a bit of kite-surfing activity in the vicinity of the hotel. The stretch of beach across the lagoon from the hotel was more popular with young families, teens etc..

The hotel itself is modern but a bit spare and functional. The bar is relatively small and lacking atmosphere. The dining-room is large and has fine sea views. The breakfast buffet was well stocked, but the “hot food” was invariably cold. We had dinner there once and the food was quite good. However, the small number of diners meant that the ambience was somewhat lacking. There’s a Wang Thai restaurant as part of the complex and it’s excellent - food & value (I recommend the squid). You can also get hot food to take-away if you’re using one of the apartments.
While we were there the hotel seemed to be mainly catering to corporate training/other business functions. The Scottish concierge John was very knowledgeable and helpful.

I probably wouldn’t recommend the hotel as a Cape Town destination - it’s a little too far out, it would be easier to stay in town. However, we used it as a base, hiring a car and touring the wine country, the southern coast etc. and it worked well for us. On several visits into Cape Town we always took a taxi.

Eating Out: Wang Thai restaurant in hotel complex is excellent. Also recommended is the strangely named “5 Flies” in Cape Town. We also liked Belthazar (meat) and Baia (fish) on the V&A Waterfront. There are lots of waterfront places where you can have alfresco fish & chips, steaks etc and a beer for very little money.

Other bits:
Afternoon Tea at the Mount Nelson Hotel is worth checking out. Bring your appetite.
Try the catered picnic at the Boschendal Winery near Stellenbosch. In peak season you’ll have to book.
Whale watching at Hermanus proved a winner for us, several whales provided a great display of breaching, blowing etc.. It’s great to see these animals perform naturally in the wild.
We took an escorted township tour. Worth doing, it shows you how far many South Africans still have to go.

Big Convention Centre - Not suitable as a Holiday Hotel

The Lagoon Beach Hotel advertised itself as a great luxury hotel in an unrivalled location, in other words, a great way to start off a splendid holiday. We therefore booked it for the first 6 days or our South Africa Trip.

Sadly, it is absolutely unsuitable as a holiday hotel. It is a massive convention complex that caters for up to 500 people for company events. So it will either be fully booked or completely deserted. It does not at all feel like a holiday hotel. The reception area is tiny, there are no lounges or relaxation areas, the small bar is usually empty and the restaurants are no great alternative either. The whole has a very cold and inhospitable feel to it. We stayed in many places in South Africa and this place does not at all reflect the customary warmth and hospitability you would normally find in South African hotels and guest houses.

Location
The Lagoon Beach Hotel is exceptionally poorly located for Cape Town, in the North of the town. Typically, Cape Town has lots of great beaches but the Lagoon Beach Hotel is on the wrong side of Cape Town, a 15mins drive from the Waterfront, away from all the real beaches amidst industrial areas and slums. Apart from the 2 Hotel Restaurants, there is nothing there to do. There are no cafes or bars, no boulevards, nowhere to walk. There is a half-a-mile stretch of sand that you can walk on, but remember that the Atlantic is max 15 degrees warm and there are ample warning signs that the water is contaminated and not suitable for swimming. The Beach is also very dirty and only used by residents walking their dogs.
The Hotel offers a reasonably priced shuttle service that goes to the water front in 2-hour intervals (ZAR 100) or to the airport (ZAR 300). Otherwise, as there is nothing to see, a car is a must.
The views of Cape Town and Table Mountain, however, are great, as is the constant beating of the seas.

Breakfast
Breakfast is only served till 10 and is standard business hotel fare, with exceptionally slow service. The staff will only check every 30mins if you would like tea or coffee and will regularly forget your orders.

Rooms
The deluxe rooms are well appointed and are the only rooms offering sea views. 24” Plasma TV and great bathroom but no Mini Bar! (You can, however, ask the staff to set up a Mini Bar for you).

Amenities
There are 2 pools, both unheated. The larger pool by the water is usually deserted, as it is too cold and windy to sit outside by the water. The water itself is too cold to swim in and dirty. It is unheated and offers little protection to lie outside other than in a polar outfit. There is a small pool on the roof by the spa that is also unheated and offers no protection from the ever/present winds and was also full of sand and silt.
The Spa offers separate saunas for men and women and various treatments.
There are 2 restaurants.

Staff
The staff are very sluggish and show no real enthusiasm for their work. When our electronic door lock ceased to function, it took the staff 25mins to come and help, despite repeated requests and another 20mins to fix it. Breakfast service was slow at best and generally inattentive and reception was unable to find our reservation despite 2 faxes and a range of emails and phone calls and confirmation over the phone that they would call/email back. They did call back eventually, 4 hours late, but on arrival, again no one knew of our reservation.

It seems the owners were looking for a cheap location to build a large hotel complex to host big conventions. They might have achieved that, but as a holiday location, Lagoon Beach is absolutely unsuitable, given what Cape Town really has to offer.

This hotel has the honor that no other hotel in Cape Town has.
It can call itself a hotel on the beach and wow what a location.
The picture perfect postcard views are here and you can see the waves break onto the beach from your bed.
The hotel is situated in the suburb of Milnerton but for all intents and purposes it's actually in Cape Town proper. A drive along marine drive road takes one to the harbour and through the harbour you end up directly in the Cape Town waterfront- a distance of maybe 15km or 15 mins by car.
The hotel placed my wife and I and our child in a two bedroom apartment and the price was fantastic. We paid one thousand rands for one night which is an absolute pittance compared to what other Cape Town hotels are demanding for a space like a Pizzabox -without views.
The apartment was tastefully and elegantly furnished with plenty of marble and light. The kitchen is fully equipped right down to a pasta making machine! Tea and Coffee facilities are provided and there is Satellite TV (but not enough channels and no cartoon channel for the kids!) Everything is new and sparkling clean. The mattresses and bedding are super comfortable and spotlessly clean. There's a nice balcony to sit on comfy chairs to watch the sea and there's a pool right by the beach. Security is very tight and you will see security guards watching the Hotel from the beach and from the parking lots. The 2 bedroom apartments are spacious and extremely well designed but they might feel a bit clinical and cold to some (there are heaters and it's warm) but there's something minimalist about the place- it seems to be lacking a soul. The sight of the waves breaking on the beach is good compensation though and you cannot get these views anywhere in Cape Town. You should be prepared for wind as this is wind country so when it blows, well it blasts.
You can eat at the excellent restuarants and there's the trendy Ice bar and Wang Thai restuarant- also excellent. The nearest supermarket for stocking the fridge is about 7 mins drive at the Paddocks shopping center in Milnerton- if you do this you'll be completely self contained and like us, you won't want to check out anytime soon. Or like us. You'll be back.
We really didn't want to leave!

This proved an excellent hotel, Good rooms and a lovely position on the waters edge. Good value for money
Staff could not have been more helpful
Food in the hotel some of the best i have tasted

No hassle to get into Cape Town as hotel runs a shuttle service and taxis are fairly cheap

Having read previous reviews I was a little worried! The Hotel is a little outside the main area of Cape Town but they run a shutle service so this wasn't a problem. We visited at the end of our stay and so had done all the sights - if we hadn't I think you would need a car!!

We stayed because of the Spa - which was great and very reasonable.

The hotel is very modern and a contemporary design - I think it is a matter of taste - we liked it!!!

On arrival the reception guy was very friendly and helpful, we went to the bar as our room wasn't ready (we were early) - we booked in for lunch and when our table was ready we weren't even allowed to carry our drinks to the restaurant - the receptionist then found us to give us our room key. We waited for a room above the ground floor as he said the view was better - see pics for view from room - if you can ask for room 257 - it was great!!!

The food is superb!!!! see attached picture of tiramasu which with a pot of coffee cost about £5. Having said that the prices were a little higher than normal Cape Town prices but then is of a much higher standard too!!!

Would thoroughly recommend!!!

I've stayed there for a week.
Pleasant location, nice Table Mountain view.
Rooms are clean, but...
I found out that a hundred of USD is stolen from my wallet. In the evening I got to know that about ten my colleagues didn't find from 100 to 400 USD!!! Lots of them kept money in safes!
Hotel management didn't responce at all!
If you want to spend your money yourself, stay in another hotel!
